Definitely worth the $.
The only thing I've ever not enjoyed about working with a Nakiri style knife is the lack of a sharp tip. This hybrid eliminates that one complaint. As far as the Kanso line goes, this is the definitive stand-out of the collection because of its weight, balance, simplicity, and (surprisingly for a Shun) it's toughness. This knife is not going to bend or break unless you do something extremely out of the ordinary with it. Knife work is super enjoyable with this model. Chopping mirepoix is a breeze. Need one last quick trim on a piece of sirloin or chicken breast? A go-to. I purchased the entire Kanso line about two months ago and have been pleased with every piece, though I do notice I use the 8" chef knife and this "Nakiri Plus" more than the others. If you work in the industry and are looking for a fun, versatile, and pretty new piece of weaponry to round out an existing collection, do not hesitate. The price and quality is unmatched. For those looking for a good knife for at-home use or those looking for a first purchase of a high-end blade, it would be better to invest first in a do-it-all chef's knife or santoku. This knife does require a solid chopping technique. It's not meant to be rocked like many other 7" styles.*SideNote* Shun recommends honing these blades with the Shun honing Steel. While it works well enough, I would highly suggest grabbing a Mac brand ceramic honing steel for only $20 to keep this Kanso in good shape.

Excellent value — wonderful knife!
This knife is fantastic for the price (I did get it on a sale, but the whole brand is great quality for the cost). I spent months looking for a knife I’d love to use, tried out dozens at stores and 4 others at home that I sent back, mostly because I found them uncomfortable or impossible to hold and use safely. One other knife sliced my hand as it fell out of my other hand’s grip. Could have been worse, but yikes! This knife is a dream. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a great quality knife at a reasonable price. It looks great and has stayed super sharp for more than a month so far, despite almost daily use.My only slight issue is that the flat, grantonless blade occasionally sticks when slicing larger hard veggies like big potatoes. The knife goes through great, but then it’s a trick to pry the potato halves off the blade. A few adjustments in cutting technique have almost completely solved this issue, so I don’t really count it as a problem. The shape is non traditional from an American perspective, but I love the large flat belly and the pointy heel, perfect for hacking into a melon or winter squash.I’m now very much looking forward to purchasing other knives of this line.

Almost Perfect
I liked that knife had good weight to it, the craftsmanship was very nice and the blade was very sharp. However the blade finish was the issue, I used it on various produce items and anything that had some kind juice or liquid coming out of it caused the produce to stick to the side of the blades. I had to wipe off the sides every time and risked cutting myself and slightly did. Over all if you don’t mind stuff sticking to the side of the blade and accumulating on it then this knife can work for you.

Great knife for veggies.
My main knife is a shun 8" (Alton's angle!) Which I like well enough. I wasn't sure about this blade style, finish, or wood handle as some reviewers complain about these things. Well, the wood handle feels great to my averaged sized man-hands, and I think it looks great, I think the finish looks good, and i am loving the shape of this blade for prepping veggies and some simple meat prepping. I can kinda see why people don't like the finish - the dull gray, to some, looks cheap. I like the different look. So it's up to you. But not every knife needs to have a shiny polished finish. The knife seems to hold it's edge well enough. If I have to be critical, it's a little tall.

Excellent hybrid blade... glad i didn't get a Nakiri.
The blade depth gives great clearance.Much more comfortable chopping and slicing (large or thick items) than a chefs knifeHybrid tip is useful.Very light belly curve does allow for rocking with small items. Herbs, mincing etc.Weight and balance are just right for this size knife. The handle is far more comfortable than it appears. (In a pinch grip)Blade finish is great for low maintenance(I love the Classic Chefs mirror polish but you have to be more mindful with washing it)While it did arrive very sharp, for those that like SCARY sharp, a touch up helped. And finally, aesthetically, I personally really like this knife. It performs as well as it appears.

I have a lot of the finer Shun knives - they're beautiful and sharp
I have a lot of the finer Shun knives - they're beautiful and sharp, but you need to be sober and aware whenever you use them, because if you cut into a bone or the wrong pit, you might twist or dent or pit them. This beast, nope. It's a great general purpose cutter, and you can relax when you're quartering a chicken.
