A Calligraphy Favorite!
Speedball did a great job in updating this textbook for their 100th year. Love the spiral binding which allows it to lay flat ad LOVE the new exemplars. Beside the beautiful fonts it gives you tips on techniques, layout and spacing. There is a lot packed in a book this size and examples from many well known calligraphers. This is a book that almost every calligrapher I know owns. It's a great reference book and they had two great co-editors for this book, Randall Hasson & Angie Veingalis. Take some time and go to each of their websites - it is well worth the visit.

Must have calligraphy book
I originallyhad an older version of this book but misplaced it so I purchased this to replace it. This version of the book is much nicer than previous versions. The spine of the book is a coil type and lets your book lay flat whwn using. The pages pages are glossy. For those starting out in calligraphy this book is the standard, it is full of useful instruction and a nice variety of font types. It focuses more on traditional calligraphy rather that the current modern style script. I have used this book in various editions for 40 years for quick reference when brushing up on skills, I am very happy with it.

A small booklet that packs a punch
Despite its small size, don't be deceived. This booklet packs quite a bit into its pages. It is able to cover over numerous Calligraphic Alphabets and letter formation. The section on Gothic lettering is especially good. I use this small book frequently, and have to say how impressed I am by what Speedball has put together. No, you're not going to get an exhaustive review of each hand, but you will get enough of the letters in each hand to get you started and on your way. The booklet is, in and of itself, beautiful. I love the fact it's spiral bound. In fact, I can sincerely say, "I love this booklet"!

Although this book gives good examples of great calligraphy
Although this book gives good examples of great calligraphy, it's not a workbook-- just a very good reference book.

A MUST-HAVE for Your Calligraphy Reference Library
This 24th edition of the Speedball textbook is SO RICH AND INSPIRING and well done!!! I am truly impressed with the quality of it and the many excellent (and NEW!) exemplars. You need it even if you have every other other calligraphy book. It's worth it! I like the spiral binding, which allows the book to lie flat when you open it. Some examples are in color, another nice touch.

A historical book of calligraphy
When I first started with my interest in calligraphy I bought the Speedball textbook, 19th edition,1965. It was wonderful, and extremely useful. This is a much later edition of that book, and has much of the same appeal as the one I remember. I just wish I had kept the old one as well. This textbook will serve beginners and mildly advanced scribes with clear, plentiful scripts, and lots of well done examples of layout and design. It's for those who don't mind teaching themselves calligraphy by trying to copy what they can study in this manual. If you get it ... don't ever throw it away or lose it. For someone going on with calligraphy you will need other books and lots of YouTube videos to learn much more of the craft than is in this book, but it's an overwhelming treasure of things to study closely. I'd rate it as a major help to those intent on learning the craft. Study it well and often.

A MUST HAVE!
The Speedball Textbook Centennial Edition book is a MUST HAVE! There is a short history of Speedball Textbooks. They have included updated calligraphy techniques plus great tips on layout and spacing letters. The practicalities of the spiral bound book makes the pages easy to turn; the book lay flat; and, since the pages are coated, they won't get messy or damaged through the years of constant use. A great all around instructional book on "beautiful writing"!

This version of the speedball textbook is worth every penny.
So I learned my earliest lettering and calligraphy skills from my mother's old 1950's era copy of the speedball textbook. I got my own copy (1969ish) in the early 1970's and it quite literally kept me alive for a few years coaxing my sign painting skills into life.Finding this version - which is like the best of the best material from all the speedball textbooks across time, was like finding both an old friend and gold, since there's so MUCH more in it than before.Of particular value are the instructions for left handed calligraphers (which I could really have used long ago, being I'm left handed...). The history is great, the practicality of it still rings true, so THIS is a bit of treasure for those who appreciate the fine art of ink lettering.

Comprehensive, interesting and visually very attractive - my favourite calligraphy book!
I own a lot of books on calligraphy and yet I had not come across this particular book until it popped up in an Amazon "you might also be interested in these items" list. I'm very pleased it did.I am enjoying this book in so many different ways: it contains lots of instructions and how to sections along with many different fonts that you can copy and learn to write, it also has a history of the book showing the different publications over time and the book also explains the reasons for the creation of some of the original, patented, Speedball nibs. So it's a "how to" with some history, some design and layout guides and lots of examples of the different fonts in use.The landscape, spiral bound, paperback format is a little different, but makes it very easy to have the book open in front of you when you're following instructions and practising calligraphy. The artwork is very appealing with a lot of the look and feel taken from earlier editions of the book and the cover gives you a very accurate indication of what to expect inside. Rather than lots of white space that you find in some of the more "arty" calligraphy books, this one is crammed with fonts, instructions, examples of fonts in use, logos and examples of good design and layout. This book would make a great gift for someone already into calligraphy or for someone just starting out. It also makes a good, if small, coffee table book with plenty to look at with lots of short, self-contained, sections of text perfect for when there's only a couple of minute's reading time available. This book is rapidly becoming a dog-eared favourite as I've been carrying it around in my bag so that I can flip through it and enjoy looking at the many fonts, and examples of the fonts in use, and also read up on the history of Speedball, the book and the development of the Speedball products. It's a brilliant source of inspiration for the framed "quotes" that I make and it's going to be very near to hand for a long time to come.If I had to have only one book on calligraphy with pens and brushes, this is it!
