Deadly and delicate.
Such a useful gadget. I did buy one that was defective, but it was replaced quickly by this seller. The key to using this is DO NOT swat. The tennis racket look is for marketing, but it is not to be swung like a fly swatter. If you hit something swinging it, it is very flimsy and will break easily. Just use it like a net or trap. By pushing a bug into a corner, it will jump or fly into the electrodes and ZAP! It kills quickly and by holding the switch buttons down, the bug sticks long enough to carry it to the trash can, then you let go and the bug is gone. It is highly useful in the car when you have a bug that keeps flying around in your face and retreating to the lower corner of the windshield where nothing can get at it. And, if you try to kill a bug like that you become a "distracted" driver and how often are you really successful? But, this device, kept within handy reach, I keep my eye on the road and with a free hand, hem the the little creep into the corner where he flies right into the wires and ZAP, no more wasp, mosquito, or Rodan like creature trying to wreck you. Also, if you hold it over a bug on the TV screen or window, it will roast them and, again, bugs stick to the electrodes for easy removal. There no smashed bug juice or powder left behind to have to clean off.

Spectacular!
For the price I paid ($10) this thing is fantastic! It most definitely zaps the bugs, and most of the time you get a very satisfying poof of smoke and mini lightning storm through the offending mosquito. This particular model is not to be used by little kids, there is absolutely no protective guard over the electrified portion. This both makes it very easy to get bugs, and easy to get yourself if you're not paying attention. My 5-yr old was getting careless with it and zapped himself in the nose. Apparently it hurt a lot, he cried a little but aside from a small red mark where he got zapped there were no lasting effects. And he's much more careful now. ;) The build quality is OK, very good for the price. It runs on 2 AA batteries and gets plenty of zapping power from them. Definitely a worth while tool if you live in an area where bugs are a problem.

Easy, Clean Way to Get Rid of Bugs
I first acquired one of these bug zappers in the late 90's. It was exactly the same as the one I acquired here on Amazon. Just insert batteries, push and hold two buttons down on bug zapper, and touch a bug with it. Works great on almost any insect. I've even used it on medium sized spiders. When the bugs are zapped they simply die. No need to apply pressure and no bug guts to clean up. I like this model over similar bug zappers because it does NOT have a protective barrier to protect the electrified metal of the bug zapper. In other models that do have this protection, it is difficult to make sure the bugs get zapped. The protection is not needed, even with children. If you get zapped, it will give you a GOOD shock. It even kinda hurts. But no other harm is done. My only complaint about this bug zapper is that it is somewhat fragile. So if you try to whack a fast moving fly to zap it and make contact with another object, you have a good chance of breaking the zapper. It will take some getting used to if you've only used a swatter type insect killing device before.

extremely useful, but a little fragile
Just got our second zapper a couple months ago. Reading other reviews, let me reiterate that it is not a swatter. Gently sweep it in the insect's path, or gently move it onto stationary bugs. They apparently don't really see it. Great for mosquitoes. In southern Arizona, often there are one or two ankle-biters on the patio, and it takes care of them. It let me go outside more in the evening. Even if you don't see them, gently sweep behind the legs until you hear that satisfying pop. They kind of sizzle with little blue flickers of light and the smell of burning meat--no joke. At my in-laws in northern Wisconsin, maybe mosquitos are juicier, because they POP loudly, sometimes like a firecracker. Great for the two-three mosquitos resting on the wall way up near the ceiling at bed time. When they pop hard, they just disintegrate. Awesome! It's amazing how one mosquito's death can be so entertaining. When I've used it on larger bugs (cone-nosed kissing bugs, grasshoppers), it only stuns them. But then they are easily crushed underfoot. Terrific organic garden pest control. Bees who take over hummingbird feeders (even with bee-guards) are sometimes only stunned, but easily mashed. That is how I broke our first one--swinging at an aggressive bee. I recommend using it on bees only in the early morning when they are sluggish. The second one worked perfectly the first month, but then began to be a little finicky as described in some other reviews. Sometimes I have to jiggle it to get the little whine that shows that it is working. Note, it does retain the charge in the wires for about maybe a second after you let off the two buttons--I found that out dislodging an injured bug for dispatch. And slide open the panel to change batteries, no need to take it apart. Had to tape battery panel on first unit shut, because after the first battery change, it became loose. Other than fragility, I'd give it 5 stars. Overall, terrific tool. It let me go back onto the patio without long pants.
