Americanul (Romanian Edition)

I bought "Americanul" after I read a post of the author on a forum of the Romanian Diaspora. I had read his first book - "Sapte ani de America" - the year before. In that one, he describes his experiences of an immigrant on the Promised Land and I liked it so much that I said to myself at the time that I would definitely buy his next books."Americanul" is very different from "Sapte ani...". "Sapte ani de America" is an easy lecture, journalistic even, which keeps you awake not necessarily because of the prose, but because of the refinement and psychological subtlety with which the author describes the cultural shock. I had expected something somewhat similar in "Americanul". To my surprise, however, I had a totally different literary experience. "Americanul' is a novel by definition - an epic story, a book very well put together, carefully polished, where the sentences are well thought. Nothing is out of the context. The story goes logically, chronologically, naturally, and is so well written that it captivates the imagination, making you "live" every page."Americanul" is based on true events. Mitu Popescu, the protagonist, was a real person, like many others in the text. His life, as described by Giosan, is absolutely remarkable. Being a fiction novel, I can imagine that some stuff is invented; but even so, if just half of what is described in the book did happen, we still learn about an exceptional destiny. Mitu is a man who was way above his generation, in many aspects - and we talk about the roaring twenties -, such as his extraordinary musical talent, his drive to make it on the Promised Land, his love for women, because of which he gets many times in trouble, his endurance when tortured in the Romanian communist prisons.I devoured the story in just a few days.

Mi-a plăcut mult. Am învățat lucruri interesante despre America și Romania anilor 1920 - 1950.

I loved reading this book and the perseverance and tenacity of the main character. I was even more intrigued because they were real life events.
