This slim, 3-disc box set is an affordable introduction to Harryhausen's sci-fi work, with two totally cool movies and one that's kind of lame, but still has some cool special effects. Here they are in chronological order:"It Came From Beneath The Sea" (1955) is the weakest of the three films. It's a Godzilla-y B.E.M. movie, with a giant radioactive octopus that destroys the Golden Gate bridge and trashes the San Francisco waterfront. The problem lies with the script: it's not actually a snoozer, but the ending is rushed and unsatisfying. A typical drive-in B-movie feature, and fine for the genre, but not totally mindblowing."Earth vs. The Flying Saucers" (1956) is awesome. It's one of those methodical, formulaic 50s sci-fi films where the set-up seems leaden by modern storytelling standards, with stock characters such as the virile scientist and his spunky and surprisingly capable girlfriend, who have to work through all the plot points before the action can take place... However, compared to many of its contemporaries this has a brisk, substantive script, and when the big battle with the UFOs finally happens, it's truly dazzling. Great special effects - amazing, actually, with a level of destruction and unrestrained chaos that's pretty breathtaking: you can still hear the echoes of the original audiences cheering with amazement and delight as one national monument after another gets pulverized in the epic battle. Bye, bye, nation's capitol! If you want to see where "Mars Attacks" and "Independence Day" got their Washington DC-destroying inspiration from, this is it. Highly recommended!"20 Million Miles To Earth" (1957) is a great monster movie, with a very sympathetic creature, ala Frankenstein and King Kong. Transported to Earth by an American space expedition, an infant alien is quickly trapped and harassed, chased across Italy until it rampages through the landmarks of ancient Rome. A fast-moving, action-packed plot with some fun romantic intrigue that rings truer than most. Very sad ending. Also highly recommended.Equally rewarding are the special bonus features, particularly the longer documentaries about Ray Harryhausen and his craft. There are features that have been included in other editions of these films, but if you don't already have them, this is a great chance to check them out. A nice set of classic 'Fifties pop culture! For real fans of Ray Harryhausen this Gift Set is a must, even if it's a gift to yourself. These three movies; "It Came from Beneath the Sea","Earth vs. the Flying Sausers","20 Million Miles to Earth" (and a few choise morsels of Ray's early work on fairy-tales and Mother Goose from the 1940's on "Ultimate Cartoon Collection: Toon Time") show the humble beginnings of one of the greatest masters of illusion in the special effects industry and a true artist. Add to that the special features "The Harryhausen Chronicles" (narrated by Lenord Nemoy), "The Making of 'Earth vs. the Flying Sausers'" and The Collectable Scrapbook and you have a real history lesson on Ray Harryhausen and Dynamation.When Ray received a special Oscar in 1992, Master of Ceremonies Tom Hanks professed his love for Ray and his presenter and long-time friend science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury did as well. In this review I profess mine.One note: the movies are in Black & White but the special features and some of the previews are in colour. This is my first time buying any of the 3 movies included in this set. I loved them all, and although I havent tried watching any of them in color yet, the picture quality is great for as old as these movies are. A must have for fans of 50's sci-fi, Harryhausen's stop motion work on the ufo's and creatures in these movies is astounding to watch, even 50+ years later. If your looking for award winning acting, this isnt where you'll find it, but if your looking for many a fun evening watching old fashioned monster movies you'll be in heaven owning this set. One scene in particular (but amung many)I was impressed with was the scene in 20 Million Miles to Earth where the Cicilian fisherman are in their boat watching the massive rocket ship slowly sink into the ocean depths,after just having saved the 2 astronauts inside it. The illusion of the sheer size of the ship in comparison to the fishing boat is amazingly effective. If your not a Harryhausen fan before seeing these movies you absolutely will be afterwards.As far as money spent on entertainment goes (about $10.00) this set is a grand-slam.Even came with a super-boss little book featuring Harryhausens artwork for the movie scenes. Cha-ching!!

They may look campy by today's special effects standards, but in their day they were the best of the best.

I got this package, but they ARE NOT the Chromachoice versions as advertised. The package I received had three disks but they were 20 Million Miles, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and It Came from Beneath the Sea. They claim to be Re-mastered but the grainy quality of the recordings would indicate that that is NOT so!I suggest that you buy them individually as the Chromachoice versions. Ray Harryhausen did the colorizing and you can switch it off to a truly Re-Mastered B&W version. However, you are missing the superior quality and detail he employed on these to attain colorization. Those are not your Ted Turner color wash. However neither are these! Nice little pamphlet included but this set is not what I wanted.

I won't take the time to write about the plots of these movies as that can be found anywhere on the internet with a "movie search." I bought this set because I remember seeing the originals at our local movie theater back in 50s and 60s. Ray Harryhausen's special effects were labor intensive and NOT computer generated. VERY IMPRESSIVE to the point where I remembered them over the decades and was glad to add this DVD set to my collection. GREAT STUFF!

I'm a big fan of Ray Harryhausen's work and this gift set is an excellent sampling. The accompanying book is icing on the cake. If you want to see special effects when it was an art form done by a creative genius before the age of CGI then you will love this.

Si comme moi, vous êtes fan de "l'homme qui faisait danser les squelettes", alors ce coffret doit faire partie de votre kit de survie.Quel plaisir de revoir le bestiaire de toutes ces créatures (R. H. n'a jamais créé de monstres !).Evidement, pour apprécier ces films et les prouesses techniques de l'époque, il faut une certaine culture.Les ordinateurs et les images de synthèse n'ont pas toujours existés, ce qui n'a pas empêché l'homme de réaliser de grands exploits, autant dans la vie réelle qu'au cinéma. Pouvez-vous imaginer que les premiers astronautes qui sont allés sur la lune, n'avait même pas de montre à quartz ! si oui, alors vous apprécierait sûrement ces trois films "vintage".Tout le bien sur ce coffret a déjà été dit, je n'ajouterai qu'une précision:- les menus des DVD sont bien en Français, mais seul le premier titre "Les soucoupes volantes attaquent" est doublé en Français. Pour les deux autres, il faudra se contenter d'une version sous-titrée (ou alors, audio en Allemand ou en Italien). Ce n'est pas vraiment un problème, surtout que l'incrustation des sous-titres est intelligemment placée.

L'immense Ray Harryhausen né en juin 1920, est le père des effets spéciaux.Il est le grand instigateur de l'animation et des trucages.Dans ce magnifique coffret ou nous avons droit à 6 DVD (les films + les bonus) on se régale véritablement.Sur les 3 premiers DVD nous avons la possibilité de voir les films d'époque en noir et blanc ou colorisés. Ray a surveillé la colorisation et était très satisfait. A l'époque il aurait aimé faire ces longs-métrages en couleurs mais c'était trop cher.Les bonus sont très très nombreux (Tim Burton face à Ray, des regards d'aujourd'hui, des galeries, le processus de la colorisation, la liste noire d'hollywood etc...).Les films maintenant:LES SOUCOUPES VOLANTES ATTAQUENT.Le docteur Marvin essaie de comprendre pourquoi toutes les fusées qu'il lance sont détruites.Réponse: les soucoupes volantes qui veulent que les humains abandonnent la planète Terre détruisent tout.Commence alors pour les terriens un incroyable combat.LE MONSTRE VIENT DE LA MER.Un sous marin nucléaire capte une étrange présence. Un morceau de cette chose est accroché au submersible.Les scientifiques après 13 jours de travail découvre qu'il s'agit d'une pieuvre énorme.Cette dernière attaque San Francisco et les hommes essaient de la tuer (pas évident).A DES MILLIONS DE KILOMETRES DE LA TERRE.une fusée tombe dans la mer en Italie. Le colonel Calder est sauvé par des pêcheurs. Il est le seul survivant des membres d'une expédition américaine de retour de Vénus.Plus tard un petit garçon trouve dans un tube une sorte de cocon. Il le vend ce qui libère une créature miniature.Mais cette dernière à cause de l'atmosphère terrestre grandit chaque jour.La suite je vous laisse la voir mais c'est absolument génial.Des trois, il est très difficile de dire quel est le mieux.Les trois sont excellents mais j'ai une petite préférence pour "Les soucoupes volantes attaquent" et "A des millions de kilomètres de la Terre"."Le monstre viens de la mer" est très bon mais à mon avis légèrement en deça bien que Ray ai fait un sacré bon boulot.Concernant la qualité des six DVD, c'est top. Une seule petite remarque: le boitier bien que magnifique est fragile. A manipuler avec précaution si vous voulez le garder comme neuf.Je le conseille ++++.Adanson Marco.

Trois des films qui ont marqués les admirateurs du talent de Ray Harryhaussen. Les bonus sont tout aussi intéressants que les films, voire plus. Cet héritier de Willis H. O'Brien a marqué le cinéma et les grands réalisateurs sur plusieurs générations. Son talent est tel que l'on en oublie qu'il y a derrière lui, sur chaque film, un réalisateur des scènes réelles et son producteur attitré Charles H. Schneer. Ce qu'il rappelle dans les bonus tout autant que l'on peut apprendre, pour ceux qui l'ignoraient, que l'intégralité du travail de trucage était réalisé avec de faibles moyens et sans technologie évoluée... par Harryhaussen lui-même et seul !

3 films magiques du grand Ray Harryhausen, un travail de colorisation remarquable (les versions noir & blanc sont également disponibles pour les puristes) et des tonnes de bonus passionnants sur les 3 DVD bonus (6 DVD en tout dans le pack). Jetez-vous dessus, c'est un ordre !!!!!
