A Gamers Guide To Building A Gaming Computer

Still relevant and informative.
This book is well written and easy to understand for those who are ignorant of the complexities of desktop computer components such as processors, motherboards, memory, hard drives, graphics cards etc. While I'm not a gamer, this book provided the information I need to purchase much faster, more efficient desktop computers for work and home. I may even try building my own system this year. While some of the info is dated, it's still mostly relevant.......and at a great price too.

Very useful
I bought this for my son who wants to build a gaming computer. He has some basic knowledge but has never attempted to build a computer before. Yes, you can find all the same information with a Google search but it was very helpful to have it all in one place and have the basics explained in case you didn't already know them. He also appreciated having the information in a book because he learns best by reading and not by watching videos. His only complaint was that grammar and editing could have been better.

Good info, and great delivery
This offers a straightforward, honest format with solid information. It gives brief, honest information about components in the order they need to be considered for build and purchasing. A little outdated, but solid advice.

But in all was a great help.
This guide was very helpful in my PC build. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the author used Windows 10 for his in stall and didn't cover 7 or any other OS choice for the build. But in all was a great help.

Best Guide I’ve read
I have read several “Build a PC” guides and this is easily the best. Has in-depth discussions about components and interfaces. The only thing it lacks is a discussion of how to choose your RAM speed if you intend to overclock. Really an educational guide.

Simple to follow...
Great for basics.! Would like to see more on custom water cooling. Would recommend for any beginner! Pretty sure I can build a pic now

Excellent coverage of all topics, and fantastic guides to show you how to save huge amounts of money!!
None of the component lists are nor can be totally up to date ever in a volume like this, yet this book worked wonderfully for me! I was never totally naive to building a PC, yet a lot has changed since I last looked under the hood of a PC properly, and then the HDDs were connected via the IDE interface, so there is a hell of a lot of changes; the concept of water-cooling back then would have just been out of reach of anyone's pockets or needs quite frankly. So, for me, I am literally waiting on the motherboard to arrive in the mail this morning, then I will begin assembling, as I already have the case any many other parts. This book has sets out a clear order of process for me in approaching my new build, and has also made it clear where there are options to add in extra bits and bobs that are specific to my particular build. I have to say that I did not use his book so much for making the choice when it came to components, as I already had in mind what level of gaming PC I wanted to build at [also don't forget that the industry moves so, so fast here, so his book is almost out of date already in this department]. However, for each component I have chosen, I made the point to refer back to his book in case there was anything I may have missed, and to clarify what some of the acronyms and such meant. I think the author though is aware of how fast things change, so this is not to say it has been ignored.Perhaps one addition the author could have made was to add a complete glossary of all the terms and acronyms that are used in computing, and in building computers, as I feel that this is one area that puts many people off of building their own machine. He does explain things at the time of writing each section, but perhaps an overall glossary for reference would be a good touch for future editions. So, wish me luck as I am soon to start the road to applying what I have learnt from the author's book, and I will come back to edit this post once I have got on with my build, so that I can confirm how helpful the book is in its entirety. However at this stage, I have to say that this book truly is a great read for anyone who wants to build their own gaming PC as it contains often very specific parts over a normal PC. It is also written in a manner that caters for readers of all abilities and levels of knowledge which is nice as well.I think one of the main things that the author slightly avoids is the subject of how much money one can save by building their own gaming PC over buying a custom or bespoke build from one of the very many custom PC building companies out there in the UK. I think in my case I will have saved a significant sum in total in building this PC myself, and I also feel that the enjoyment [and strife] involved in building one's own PC is priceless without wishing to overstate a point! I think I will have spent around £1,250 on parts up to now, and I don't need to purchase a monitor right now as my old one is an HD TV/monitor which is under 18 months old. However when I have put the same parts into 'build your own PC' lists on the online builders' websites, the price quoted often comes up as being many hundreds of pounds more. Of course this is not a scientific test, but is a good indication of what can be achieved by building your own PC over buying one direct - I can guarantee that my own-build gaming PC will be a much, much higher spec than one I could have bought from an independent supplier myself, and I will also have the satisfaction of having built it myself!Although the prices of parts within this book are quoted in pounds-Sterling, I think this is the only part that would not translate for the North American audience - I feel that the processes, parts, and theories are all the same in practice no matter where you are in the world, so overall I would suggest that you can certainly make your own gaming PC for far less than it would cost to buy one from a specialist online builders. As for how easy it is to build one, that waits to be seen, yet it revolves around my own personal abilities to build one, so this cannot be the fault of the book! As mentioned I will return once I have built mine to confirm that the book is all it is set out to be.Final sentences: - you can save a hell of a lot of money by building your own gaming PC nowadays rather than buying one from an online bespoke retailer, or specialist PC-builder; it is also easier than you thought. And if you feel that you are up to the challenge of doing it yourself, then this book is for you, as it certainly covers just about everything I can think of that you need to know, and building-methods that you will need to know how to apply, when building your own gaming PC. Get this book and save yourself a few hundred quid on a new gaming PC, learn loads of skills for solving issues when a PC goes wrong, and having a blast when building a new gaming PC for yourself or a loved one!!

Brilliant guide.
Great book. Very detailed without being convoluted, and the author doesn't use any unnecessary jargon. It helped me a lot in narrowing down what I was after. It also takes the time to explain about potential cross compatibility issues between different components which was something I could easily have overlooked. Five Stars!

Use the Internet instead
You really don't need this book. It is outdated simply because that is the way tech works and so only deals with general principles.
