Take Notes! Treasure Trove for Dialoguing with John's Thoughts
Not done reading this yet. Been taking a lot of notes. This is a great resource if you are familiar with the man's films and with ideas on cinema in general. The ways in which Cassavetes broke the mold seem to me much more important and continually relevant than the overemphasis on American New Wave or Method acting one encounters in contemporary American film culture. Unfortunately, there isn't an index in the back of this book. You should take notes and build your own references into the text; lots of practical SITG in this book. Could use more photos; those are always interesting.

This promises to be a very interesting book. However for those considering this......
When I first started reading with my glasses of many years I was okay until I removed them and had difficulty seeing clearly due to the size of the print. That passed quickly. Today I read at a window and saw better but I have decided to buy new glasses from a nearby highly rated source. I look forward to reading it.Hence, if you are considering buying this remember that the print is smaller than usual as I had no problem with all the baseball books that I also bought from Amazon. Note: I bought the Hard Cover.

Great insight on John cassavetti's
Great book the writer tells all about John Cassavetes in great detail. Cassavetti's is a great Actor And as a director his ideas were stronger than the written word. I admire him for Is dedication and belief in himself. He could be a liar and a p**** But he was still amazing.

Underappreciated
No greater filmmaker has ever trod the earth. The DIY ethic of every film Cassavetes ever made is described in great detail by the man himself in this seminal work by Raymond J. Carney, the world renowned Cassavetes scholar. Material is sourced from other interviews with Cassavetes, his friends, famiy, and actors, and conversations with the author. I was a fan of his films before I ever purchased the book and the stories behind the making of the films only deepens their hold on me as they were truly the works of the soul. There was never was a belief that the films wouldnt get made despite great financial difficulty. Cassavetes had what many men in our culture lack these days, self-reliance and an indomitable will. Cassavetes was in the game of making movies on his own dime and ingenuity long before McQueen got in the game with Le Mans. This book fleshes out just what an uncompromised life looks like and what being a pioneer really means. Sleepless nights, editing for 48 hours at a time, getting equipment and funds by hook or by crook to finish a project, never quitting until the final cut. I recommend this book to anyone, not just Cassavetes fans. This is the book on self-improvement, follow his example and your life will get better and be much fuller and richer for the doing.

Possibly the best book about any director.
My half-hearted browser's interest in Cassavetes needed a kick in the seat of the pants, I now realize, and reading this book shows me how much I failed to appreciate him while we were lucky enough to have him around. The format is eye-opening. Cassavetes speaks, and then the author. The constantly shifting P.O.V., and the frisson between the truth Cassavetes himself presented, and the unvarnished truth as discovered by the author, makes this book constantly stimulating and endlessly arguable.Cassavetes life and films are worth a serious look-see -- and this book is an EXCELLENT place to begin that-- if only because he is that rare individual who absolutely refused to accept mediocrity in himself and others, both as an artist and a committed liver of life. He went for the burn every time out, and could often be an ornery s.o.b. when he detected that people were simply going through the motions in their life or art. (The book is rife with anecdotes that literally make you wince and leave you wondering "Could I have long tolerated this behavior in a friend or family member?") He seems never to have thought "I'd better not burn my bridges here", or practiced any of the other forms of incremental, over-thought cowardice that most of us do.Cassavetes was driven like no one else; he never made a lazy, easy commercial film. He let his life and films commingle, letting the cameras roll for hours, shooting thousands of feet more film than he could use, afterward sculpting it into a shape that could be released. (He said film stock was the one part of his film making on which he would never scrimp.) His films were, probably more than any other director's, explorations of life.Cassavetes lived life so completely that it might be truthful to say he did something the average person would call foolhardy nearly every day of his life, in some way or other. But in spite of this, or because of it, it's impossible to come away from this book without an awakened admiration for him.

It's Cassavetes Damnit!
Get with this program. Cassavetes is why we have independent cinema today! He is the master. Watch and learn... or in this case, read and learn... but whatever you do, learn from this master before going out to make your own!

By far one of the best biographies on Cassavetes
By far one of the best biographies on Cassavetes. I had a class solely on him and he's brilliant! The quotes and tips he says in the books are great for any filmmaker aspiring to be a director. He's a great inspiration. Though at times the author repeats Cassavetes quotes, it's still a great read. I liked both what the author had to say and Cassavetes' own words, though I started to ignore the paragraphs the author wrote after awhile because Cassavetes was way more interesting in how he said things.

The best book on film ever written
The best book on film that has even been written, or will ever be written. It's 500 pages, I'm reading it now for the second time, and I hate long books.

Cassavetes on Cassavetes
Useful text for students of film as it contains much original material by Cassavetes himself, and the author's text puts it in the context of the times & the film industry in broader terms.
