Fat with delicious anecdotes. Needs an update to include the last two decades but that is a small wish in the light of centuries of great inclusions.

Pro: Good for idle bathroom reading, quoting to make oneself seem more educated, or having on your coffee table.Con: Book is not actually brown nor is it little.

One of best books like this that I have used. Layout is easy to use and I especially appreciate the short biographies of the sources of some of the anecdotes. Many of the historical figures are relatively obscure and a trip to Wikipedia to find out who they were would be a lot more work than necessary in most cases.I use this resource primarily for sermon illustrations and I have found many appropriate for that use. I actually find this book to be better than many sermon illustration resources because instead of trying to tell me how to use them by categorizing the anecdotes by topic, this book categorizes them by the source of the anecdote.

I own four copies of this book: A nice hardback for the shelf, a softcover to leave in the guest room, a rather shop-worn softcover to lend, and an ebook for my kindle. I read lots of other things, of course, but I always come back to this lovely, delightful book. I envy you if you are discovering this for the first time.

This excellent book of anecdotes is a necessary addition to any teacher's library...Or anyone's bookshelf who does any speaking at all. A good anecdotetells you more about a person than a whole volume of factual material...And this book if full of interesting, often humorous stories. I love this book. Thanks, Amazon!

An amusing compendium of stories about (mostly) famous people. The tales range from the ridiculous to the inspirational, and the people from classical Greece to the contemporary USA. However, the book is painfully marred by a lack of proofreading. When the print edition was scanned, the OCR misread the ligature for "rt" as "n," turning art into an and parties into panies. There are other serious typos, presumably from the same cause. That cost the ebook one star.

It is over 30 years old, but is still a classic. Well worth adding to your collection.
