Speedy (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Great film, and Lloyd's work is usually well preserved. Unfortunately, wrong region for my player!

Excellent transfer as usual from Criterion. Cool to see Babe Ruth in the film as part of the story. A must have for any Harold Lloyd fan.

I will not add my pointless praise of the movie and restoration. I just wanted to say the making-of documentary is fabulous.

I picked this one up the other day at my local retailer and WOW....Criterion normally does a good to great job and this one is great. Firstly, the print is sublime. Chaplin and Lloyd preserved their masters and it shows as the movie looks absolutely wonderful and for me that helps my appreciation. Again, every time a Chaplin or Lloyd movie comes out on Blu Ray it is cause for excitement but it also makes me sad that the Keaton films (all available on Blu Ray) are in such sad shape by comparison... but I digress. The bonus features on this blu ray are particularly interesting for me anyway. 40 plus minutes of archival Babe Ruth footage is fun and I'm really glad to have it (Babe Ruth has a wonderful cameo in Speedy if you are wondering WHY he would be included). Some home movies of Lloyd presented by his grand daughter are also welcome. There is a feature on the making of Speedy that concentrates on the locations etc and I found it to be very informative and enjoyable. AND if that wasn't enough "Bumping Into Broadway" a 1919 two-reeler is added to the bonus features. This film is not in the same condition as the main release but good enough and as the theme is New York based it is a fitting companion. Bumping into Broadway is also famous as it is the first film that Lloyd featured his "Glasses" character. All in all I hadn't looked as forward to this release as I had Safety Last or The Freshman , but after only one viewing and enjoying the bonus features it takes no back seat to them in my collection and I give it my HIGHEST recommendation

…and possibly the only Harold Lloyd blu ray to buy if you're on a tight budget. I've just watched the main feature and some of Lloyd's home movies, "Speedy" looks pretty much like it must've when first shown, the home movies (worth watching) show their age a bit. I didn't really like the score except for the added sound effects.You see a lot of New York City from the un recognizable skyline to plenty of silly street scene action (most of it appears to have been filmed right there in the streets rather than in a studio somewhere), not a great reliance on interior settings.Coney Island has a big role in the movie, go ahead and watch it but it seems more like a long bit of filler than anything else ("Speedy" meets his dog there).Babe Ruth makes his appearance well into the movie, only part of it was filmed footage of a game at Yankee Stadium, he was good- for what little you get to see of him.I don't regret buying this movie.

After seeing Safety Last! And The Freshman, on Criterion blu ray, I knew I had to get this little gem with the great Harold Lloyd. The story is basically pretty simple Lloyd's glasses character trying to save the city's last horse drawn street cart from shutting down. Okay but the stunts around New York are amazing, no stuntmen, no cgi, just Lloyd at his athletic best. And a cameo from Babe Ruth. What's not to like. This is a new 4K transfer from Criterion, detail is amazing, but most importantly the film speed is correct. No speed up or skip frames. For a film that's ninety years old this is as good it'll ever look.

The movie is one of Harold Lloyd s best with street scenes of NYC in the 20s an d Babe Ruth. Amazon sent it with no shrink wrap as if I were buying used?

Confession: I rented this from my local video store.The usual meticulous CC production. The print quality is beautiful and the location shots are a fascinating documentary in themselves. Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton are my favorite silent comedians avoiding the sentimentality and occasional coarseness of Chaplin.The main feature has the same fault that all feature length silent comedies have which is that they veer from frantic action to slow exposition scenes. This creates an uneven story flow and lapse in impetus.The extra features are generous and interesting. You may find your attention wandering during the "Babe Ruth" and "home movies" segments but after all, you don't have to watch them!The film is highly recommended.

邦題『ロイドのスピーディー』ハロルド・”スピーディー”・スウィフト(ハロルド・ロイド)は、気の良い青年ながら、ヘマが多く、仕事が長続きしない。今度も、ドラッグ・ストアのソーダ給仕の仕事を辞めてしまう。そんなハロルドを、恋人であるジェーン・ディロン(アン・クリスティ)と彼女の祖父(バート・ウッドラフ)は心配するが、当人は、いたって楽天的。そんなある日、祖父の所有する馬車鉄道を買収しようと企む大手鉄道会社の話を立ち聞きしたハロルドは…。チャールズ・チャップリン、バスター・キートンと共に「三大喜劇王」と呼ばれたハロルド・ロイド主演の最後のサイレント作品。主人公の名前「スピーディー」は、実際に、ロイドが父親に付けられたあだ名で、『ロイドの人気者』(北米盤Blu-ray” The Freshman ”)でも登場している。ニューヨークが舞台ということで、ベーブ・ルースが、本人役で特別出演し、しかも、なかなかの好演を披露しているのも観逃せない。後半の馬車鉄道の疾駆という大きな見せ場はあるものの、取り立てて大きなメッセージや明確なテーマがあるわけではなく、基本、1920年代のニューヨークの風俗と生活を、ロイドとともにのんびりと楽しむという趣の一編だ。仕事をクビになっても落ち込まず(「月曜日になったら、新しい職が見つかるさ！」)、前に進むとことん楽天的な主人公のように、気ままで、清々しい、いつものロイド作品ならではの明朗な作風が本作の持ち味。ドラッグ・ストアでの、ヤンキースの試合経過を電話で逐次確認しながらのソーダ給仕、何とか客を乗せんと奮闘するタクシー・ドライバー稼業、コニーアイランドでの恋人との日曜デート…どれも、ニューヨークで暮らすごく普通の青年の日常スケッチといった感じで、楽しく活写されている。特に、コニーアイランドで、スピーディーとジェーンが、様々な遊戯に興じる姿は(もちろん、ロイドのアイデア溢れるギャグや笑いで彩られている)、作品全体の構成を考慮すると、若干、長すぎるようなきらいもあるが、日々の労働の疲れから解放され、休日を心ゆくまで楽しむ、ほんわかとした温かさとささやかな幸福感が伝わってくる名場面だ。映画史では、印象的な遊園地の場面が出てくる名品が多いが―『 サンライズ 』、『踊る騎士』、『忘れじの面影』など―、本作なども、それらに加わる資格があるだろう。もちろん、そういったニューヨークのスケッチ的描写だけに止まらず、『ロイドの要心無用』のビル登りや『ロイドの人気者』のフットボール試合にも負けない、派手なクライマックスも用意されている。本作では、スピーディーの仲間である老人たち(中には、南北戦争の元兵士もいる！)と鉄道会社に雇われた荒くれ者たちとの大乱闘を皮切りにして、運行開始時間に間に合うように、スピーディーが、馬車鉄道を操って疾駆する場面がそれだ。鉄道会社の連中の妨害をものともせず、ニューヨークの街中を狂ったように、自由自在に走り回る馬車鉄道のスリルとサスペンスと笑いがミックスされた場面は、サイレント・スラップスティックの真骨頂(馬車鉄道の車両が、高架の柱にぶつかるのは、実際のアクシデントだそうだ)。製作中に、本作が、自身のサイレント作品の最後になることをロイドが意識していたのかは知る由もないが―『 ジャズ・シンガー 』が公開されて、トーキー革命が起こって半年経っていた―、セリフなどに頼る必要もないサイレント喜劇の底力を存分に出し切っている感じだ。ロイドのサイレント期の長編作品としては、『ロイドの要心無用』や『ロイドの人気者』に比べると知名度が低いが(もっとも、小津安二郎監督などは、『大学は出たけれど』で、主人公の部屋の壁に本作のポスターを貼らせて、ファンであることを表明している)、前述通り、余計なメッセージやテーマがない分、より素朴でのびやかな喜劇になっていると言えるかもしれない。本Blu-rayは、2013年の『要心無用』、2014年の『人気者』に続き、米Criterionから発売されたもの。米UCLA Film & Television所蔵の35mmマスター・ポジ(一部、ネガも使用)を4Kフィルム・スキャンして、丁寧にカラコレ、レストアを施して作られたHDマスターを使用。もちろん、レストアでも取り切れなかった細かいキズが少し残ってはいるものの、深みを感じさせる白黒諧調の豊かさ、ディテール表現(フィルム・グレインも適度)の精細さなど、目の覚めるような極上の画質だ。伴奏音楽は、カール・デイヴィスが作曲したもの(2.0ch リニアPCM)。いつものデイヴィスらしく、繊細かつ表現豊かで、作品を盛り上げている。特典には、以下のものが収録。例によって、米Criterionらしい気合いの入った特典が盛りだくさんだ。すべて、HD画質(ただし、プログレッシブとインターレースのものがあり)。●New York’s Film Forumの編成担当ブルース・ゴールドスタインとTurner Classic Moviesの編成担当スコット・マクギーによるコメンタリー●ゴールドスタインによるニューヨークのロケ場所解説In the Footsteps of “Speedy”(31分06秒)●ベーブ・ルースのニュース映像集 (40分24秒)●ゴールドスタインによる削除場面写真を使った解説(4分24秒)●ロイドの孫娘、スザンヌ・ロイドの解説によるホーム・ムービー映像(17分45秒)●”Bumping into Broadway” 1919年製作の2巻もの短編(25分51秒)同梱されているブックレットには、映画評論家、フィリップ・ロペートによる"The Comic Figure of the Average Man"と題するエッセイが掲載。本Blu-rayは、北米盤ながら、日本と同じR-Aなので、日本の通常のBlu-rayプレーヤーで問題なく視聴可能だ。映画ファン必携の一枚で、文句なしの星5つ！ The Freshmanサンライズジャズ・シンガー
