Product is great, but is advertised as the whole thing. This is only the tire carrier itself. The box even said, “rear bumper w/ tire carrier” but was not true

So full disclosure I purchased the bumper (76851-01) secondhand (unused and unmounted) and the tire carrier here standalone. Item # 76851-02 is the tire carrier. The photo of the item listed here is incorrect, but the part number is the proper one. I offer this review to add to the few that exist for this product online. My application is on a 2001 XJ Cherokee 4.0l 4x4 Sport, last of the breed. My experience with this seller wasn't stellar, but doesn't affect my review of the product. East coast jeeps sent me a tire carrier for a YJ wrangler originally, which was part # 78851. Simple mistake, and they fixed it. Getting my proper part took approximately one week. Now onto the product itself. I include a review of both parts, as many buy them together and they integrate perfectly. The fit and finish is superior. The powder coat is thick and an attractive spiderweb pattern with a low sheen to it. Very durable powdercoat, which will lead to some assembly difficulties I'll cover later. The fit is very good, and contrary to what another negative review indicated this bumper will fit with a factory gas tank skid plate with minor modifications (to the skid, not to the bumper mounts). It will not fit with the factory tow hitch in place. That must be removed. It may be an issue for those who like their factory tow bar, but the bumper does have an integrated hitch receiver that is very stout and tied in. Full 2" tow hitch receiver. The bumper mounts are stout. They mount with three bolts along the "frame" rails, and mount using the included nut strips. These are also powder coated. Getting mine to fit with my skid plate was a challenge but is not impossible. And clearly worth it if you actually take your XJ on trails. Those rail mounts also tie in to the factory bumper mounts below the hatch, each side with the four factory bolts. Now it's most likely due to my troubles with my gas tank skid, but I could not get those four bolts to line up sufficiently to drive them in, so each side only got two. This isn't a deal breaker for me, as my skid was not square due to previous damage and the "frame" rail mounts at 1/4" thick are plenty stout to handle the weight of the bumper, tire carrier, and tools and such I'll be adding to it. Those four factory bumper mounts that support the stock sheetmetal factory bumper are of notional strength anyway, tying in to double thick sheetmetal, not anything substantial.Lifting this bumper into place is no easy feat. Everything lined up well enough, but the heft of this bumper at 1/4" thick all over is significant. I'm very happy that the bumper would sit on the mounts without something else to support it as I got the hardware in place. If it didn't hang freely like it did this would have been a two man job all the way through. My tire swing was missing some hardware, but a call to smittybilt has it on its way free of charge.A nite on further assembly. Remember that high quality, thick, textured powder coat finish? Well when it comes to emolacing the main huge pin for the tire carrier, you will likely learn to hate the durability of this finish. I decided it best to "test fit" the main pin by dropping it place. Once I did, it became lodged in place under its own weight. (Remember, the pin is 6" long and 1.5" diameter machined steel, it's heavy) it's also slick and is a tight fit. There was no way I could get it back out. It also wasn't seated fully, the top, rather than flush as it should be,maws about 1" proud. So I had to hit it with a brass hammer to seat it fully. No turning back, I drove it home with 20-30 hard whacks. Doing so slightly deformed the top of the pin, making the cam adjuster not fit. Out came the set of files to correct the misshapen pin and to remove the powder coat from the inside of the cam. After some handwork the fit was once again proper. Everything lose went together as planned, but because of my "test fit" fail I was never able to properly grease the main pin as I'd hoped. I plan to add a grease zerk to make the hinge greaseable in the future. Should be simple enough. The kit is supplied with three wheel lugs with nuts. These lugs require a Oress of some sort beyond what I have. I attempted to pull them into place using my air impact at over 100# feet and could not get them seated. Again I blame the powdercoat. If I had filed the finish out of the holes I may have been able to seat them. As it stands I got them just far enough to engage my wheels. I'm running 2015 Wrangler JK Moab wheels, which are heavily backspaced and are likely not helping. Finally, the fuel can holder is simply too small to fit my scepter 5 gallon military fuel tank. This is a major bummer as I've made a diy spout for the can and there's no way this can will fit. The filler neck angle and shape are not compatible with the "clipped" wpshape of the top right corner of this carrier frame. I'll add a photo when I get a chance. So for any of you hoping you military surplus NATO jerry can will fit, I'm here to tel, you it will not. If someone has a modification that works to get it to fit, please let me know. I've thought of cutting the filler neck down to half height, and perhaps hammering the 3" tube flat underneath for clearance. Email me your solution at:[email protected] await the latch pin and hardware in the mail before I can complete this review, when I can report on rattles and latch function. I hope this helps.Troop Throwback

Be careful when you order. This is just the tire carrier. Not the bumper, dome reviews said it was the bumper but when I received it, I got the tire carrier portion
