Great pen from a great brand
I really like Lamy fountain pens. The Al-Star is no exception. I have several Lamys, and I can't decide which I like best. They all write well. Make sure to first clean them thoroughly, especially any converters using a bulb syringe and a regular syringe and blunt needle for the converter respectively using dish soap and water (they can have oily manufacturing residue) for best performance. The Al-Star is comfortable to hold, well balanced, and modern looking. Lamy's interchangeable nibs are in a class of their own as far as looks and performance go, despite their relative wide nib-size variability compared to the three big Japanese brands.

smooth writing and feels premium
I was worried since my lamy safari and studio felt genuinely awful to write with that this would be something similar, but this pen feels amazing to write with and hold.

Can't go wrong with Lamy
I have several Lamy fountain pens, and you really cannot go wrong with the AlStar - the aluminum body makes it lightweight and sturdy. I write without the cap posted, so the balance is just right for me. The nibs are always quality - the mediums are a little finer than some, to be expected from a European company. Got this one in the stealth black and I use it with my Midori Traveller's Notebook to make lists and journal notes. Will always keep one on my desk, they're a great value. Order the converter as the Lamy cartridges are proprietary to Lamy.

Excellent pen for everyday use.
I'm a college student and after reading about fountain pens on the internet, I thought "Why not?" and went ahead with this purchase; I'm glad I did.Initially, I didn't like the ink that came with the pen (a blue, watery ink). I switched out the original cartridge (that it came with) for the refill converter (Z24). Along with the converter, I bought a brand of ink called "Noodler's," specifically the black waterproof one, after reading the very high reviews it received from customers here at Amazon.I like how the pen allows variable width (as do all/most fountain pens to my understanding). I think it adds a layer of character to your already somewhat unique handwriting. The pen is comfortable to write with. Some people have been commenting that this pen is large. Indeed, it is than most ball-point pens. It is not, however too large that it would be cumbersome to write with. I have somewhat small-average hands, and have no problem using this pen for long periods of time. I worried that the pen might be "scratchy" but to me, it isn't. Of course, what is considered "scratchy" is subjective, so take that with a grain of salt.I bought the "extra-fine" nib. The thing I wanted to know at the time of considering this purchase was how think the lines were going to be. To my dismay, I found very little useful information. What does "extra-fine" and "fine" mean relative to the pens that I'm used to (ballpoint pens)? Allow me to share some anecdote as objective information (it kind of is) and say that if you were to draw a line with a 0.5 Pilot G2 pen, it is slightly thicker than that line. It is, however, slightly thinner than the lines made by the 0.7 Pilot G2 pen. This is for the "extra-fine" nib. I don't have any other size nibs, and so cannot compare. I think another someone posted a picture comparing the different nib sizes, so a combination of that picture and the information I've given would give a rough estimate of how think the lines are going to be.TLDR: It's a good pen. Writes a tad thicker than 0.5 G2 pen. Get the converter and another brand of ink. It's not too big.

Good stuff -- extra fine nib is a bit scratchy
I'm a left hander, and the Lamy "fine" nib flows much more freely than I like. The extra fine nib is nice and precise, and certainly doesn't flow much. So, in a trade off, it's a little scratchy and occasionally you have to re-trace a line. But, for a lefty, it's a small price to pay for avoiding smears. The pen is light and nimble. It's a little tall, but very comfortable to use, and certainly one of the most recommended "starter pens" for fountain pen beginners. The Lamy ink cartridges work well, though obviously you'll want to get an ink refill converter so you're not stuck with only Lamy's ink (plus, they're more expensive than buying ink in a bottle). I do use the ink cartridges for air travel, as I have problems with (reservoir) ink leaking in my Pilot Metropolitan on planes. So the Lamy cartridges are great for that. But overall, I recommend the pen very highly. You shouldn't expect it to equal a $200 pen, but it's a great everyday instrument.

Great fountain pen
I have 6 Lamy Safari fountain pens and I'm never disappointed when I buy one. This one is a beautiful silver color (although it said it was gray) that I am very happy with. If you're giving this as a gift, however, there might be a little problem. I ordered two Lamys and both came with the boxes crushed. That is a problem with Amazon though and not with Lamy itself.

Great pen - perfect for left handers
This pen is brilliant. Previously I tried the Parker fountain pens, but the pens were scratchy and the ink always used to smudge. I gave the right handed fine point Lamy safari a go. But again, the pen was scratchy and the plastic case really didn't appeal to me. But this pen is perfect for me, the nib isn't scratchy, the ink doesn't smudge and the case is aluminium. Brilliant, really happy. It's an absolute joy to write with,

Bella, economica e funzionale
