A story of pain, sorrow, suffering, loss, love, joy, and redemption.
An unexpected, humorous, and powerful underdog story. Alice Walker’s 1982 book The Color Purple is an uplifting story about the woe and hardships of a depression era African American woman in rural Georgia as she navigates a setting of oppression, share croppers, and blues singers. The story centers on Celie, a poor downtrodden woman. Celie suffers abuse from her stepfather, Alphonso, before being cruelly separated from her loving sister, Nettie, and married off to an unfaithful, abusive husband, Albert, better known as Mister.Mister is a big man in a little pond, unfaithful, self-centered, and a bully. Celie seems fated to be surrounded by abusive and brutish men, who ultimately lack character, integrity, and heart. Ironically, Mister’s eldest son, Harpo, has his own plans to be a big man, but he marries a big woman named, Sofia, who keeps him check under her imposing thumbs.Reminiscent of Citizen Kane and Rashomon, the story is told with distinct voices and characters. On one hand, Celie is the story narrator and speaks with an eloquent, measured, and unlocked mind. At other times, the voice is replaced by letters Celie writes to God and her sister. Like flawed perfection, her writing style is a product of her time and place in history. The letters reveal Celie is a novice writer, but her unsophisticated language skips the narrative convention and directly invites the reader to share her innermost thoughts, hopes, and feelings. The story also introduces Celie to notable characters who embody traits she has always denied herself. Through Sofia, she discovers strength and resilience. Though, sadly, Sofia suffers painful consequences for being recklessly headstrong. More importantly, Celie discovers self-confidence and unconditional love from the alluring blues singer Shug Avery.Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize, this is an unexpected, humorous, and powerful underdog story. If you want to feel pain, sorrow, suffering, loss, love, joy, and ultimate redemption, read The Color Purple.

amazing
5 StarsI did not remember anything from the movie but there is no way it was nearly as good as this book. I was in tears so many times but man that ending had me sobbing. What a story. I want to read the other 2 books related to this one now. This is so worth reading!

One of my favorites
The soundtrack to the move of The Color Purple is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have been listening to it since I bought my extended play cassette version when I was in high school (and had to save up to afford it). Not only does listening to the album take one through the emotional experience of watching the movie (or reading the book), but it also stands alone. The music is sophisticated and deeply touching - often evoking a visceral and spiritual response that is damn near inspirational. I cannot find words to describe how much Quincy Jones' music from The Color Purple has influenced my life and my musical sensabilities. Simply brilliant.
