Great illustrations, kids love the flaps!
This book is excellent! My 7 year old daughter came up to me yesterday and was telling me facts about ancient Rome. The kids love the flaps! Great illustrations. Just enough history mixed in with fun illustrations to convey the point. I would buy a similar book on any other culture as well. I bought this book in preparation for our trip to Rome this summer. All three of my daughters (5,7,9) have enjoyed it.

Excellent and fun
this is the type of book that makes learning fun. It is like a comic book but with realistic drawings of people, their houses, their workplaces, roads, farms, and city layout. This would be the perfect book to take on an airplane with a child between the ages of 5 and 12. There are so many small illustrations, in addition to the fun of trying to locate the tiny flaps, that this would keep a child occupied for quite a while and each page is constructed of cardboard so it is very durable.

The book is fine and what I expected
The book is fine and what I expected. The condition of the book left a lot to be desired. It was purchased as 'new' but is remarkably shop worn, with crushed corners, etc.I purchased it as a gift for young children, and it is overdue, so I'll give it to them and not return it. But, it is disappointing quality.

Awesome book!
This is our son’s (3 yo) favorite book! We got it in Rome when he was 2 1/2, and he’s about to turn 4 in a couple weeks. We read it almost every night. The pictures and flaps are engaging, and he has learned a lot. The book’s content is old enough that it will continue to grow with him.

Great book for children
Just had to add a few words about this book. It's designed for young children so is completely appropriate for 5 yrs and up (if not younger.) All illustrations are 'cartoon' type but very accurately depict life in Roman times (since we are studying that era currently we are familiar with such.) The Roman bath scene shows many men rome-ing about (sorry, couldn't resist) who are naked, however, only their buttocks show - again, in cartoon form. Very inoffensive. The Colosseum page shows a very tiny bit of blood under several very small, dead gladiators - all shown from a distance perspective. So please bear this in mind and don't bypass this book for concern of its appropriateness. We are conservative homeschoolers and highly approve of it. My 9 year-old daughter still loves to lift the flaps on books like these to discover what's beneath so clearly it appeals to a broad range of children.

Excellent book on Rome for kids
This is one of the best books to explain Roman life and history to young kids. The illustrations are beautiful and under the flaps one can find out how things worked. Its also humorous (for example it points out a boy who is late for school!). Wonderful find!

My little reluctant-readers liked this well enough
My little reluctant-readers liked this well enough. The boys found the flaps a bit hard to lift, but 150 years ago they'd have been going up chimneys, so there you go.

Great project book
Bought this captivating book for Granddaughter doing school project on Romans! It went down a treat, bringing Ancient Rome colourfully alive. It has brought much enjoyment to her and her school friends. Buy it worth every penny!!!!

Good Book
Bought to introduce young children to the Romans in advance of a trip to Rome. I chose this particular book as we have several in the "Look Inside" Series and they are a great way to engage the interest of younger children. Also the blurb seemed to suggest it was more focused on the actual city of Ancient Rome rather than generic Roman subjects. Unfortunately it was a bit disappointing in that respect. There are generic pages on the army, baths and housing which are covered in all the other Romans books we have looked at. It does relate the gladiator games specifically to the Colosseum but I was disappointed that there was no mention of chariot races/Circus Maximus (maybe a more suitable subject for the Games page than gladiators for younger readers?) or the Panthenon which would have covered two more of the sights of Rome. That said it is a lovely book with wonderful illustrations.

Brilliant book!
I bought this book two years ago for my son (now 8 years old) and he still loves it. It's one of his favourites. The facts are so interesting and it is well illustrated. With so many flaps to lift, they'll be happily entertained for a while.
