Dr Paul Lam presents this guide to Yang, the most popular style of Tai Chi, which is characterised by gentle, graceful and expansive movements.

Exactly what I'd hoped for
I had been thinking about trying to learn Tai Chi but haven't got time or money to do another class, and thought a DVD would be a good way of dipping in and out of it without committing to a time each week. Having read the reviews of Dr Lam's 24 Form DVD I decided his style was probably the best one for me, but I was a little concerned about the poor reviews about the structure of the DVD (people said it was just a video made into a DVD so you couldn't navigate round it). I am pleased to say that this DVD is in a proper DVD format and is split into logical sections so you can skip the warm up etc and go straight to the form you are working on. The 40 forms are tackled individually and are split into 4 sections with a demo of the whole of the section at the end. At the end of the DVD, Dr Lam demonstrates the whole of the 40 forms from both front and back views. Each individual form is demonstrated by Dr Lam, then there is tuition and finally a run through from two different angles with the support of an assistant, which is helpful for the spacially challenged. I found it took me a little while to get into the zone, but I soon tuned into Dr Lam's teaching style and established a pattern of learning from the rotated/mirror image or the back view. The only downside to this DVD is the annoying American 'voiceover man' who introduces each form and invites you to 'follow Dr Lam', but this is just a minor irritation. There is a lot of material on this DVD and it will keep me busy for a long time.

Good
Its not exactly the same as i do in my class but it is very good and breaks all the moves down into bite sized pieces.

For Every Age and Condition!
Although it's slightly different from the classes that I take, the explanations are slow and well described with teacher and demonstrator. The instructions are clear with reassurances that if you have limited mobility or balance, you can still practice Tai Chi with just a few easy adjustments; neither do you have to subscribe to Eastern spirituality. This is excellent for those who wish to benefit from gentle (but effective) exercise without having to undergo high impact regimes. I recommend this DVD for every level - it starts with health concerns and begins with warm-up exercises. Each stage is described in sequence, with a full demonstration at the end, so you can learn a bit at a time and then practice a full section, watching the teacher as you go through it yourself. The graceful movements of Dr Lam certainly inspire you to keep trying and as you can practice this come rain or shine in the privacy of your own living room, there are practically no barriers to developing a regular pattern of exercise. It's excellent value!

Tai Chi
Have only just started using this DVD. As a beginner, I am finding some of theforms difficult to follow. II intend to persevere for now to see if I can overcome.Having said that - Dr Lam's instruction is gentle and slow. Perhaps it's too earlyto completely judge the DVD as only just started practice.

As always, he is the Master, his teaching is gentle, simply explained, giving time to the demonstrations, I love all his DVD's especially the 32 Sword Form and the 40 forms. I have never been to any of his workshops but my teacher Ann attends his workshops at least once a year.During my practice I feel his energy is guiding me.Thank you Dr Lam and his student teacher Ann Hunt for her skill and knowledge.Doreen Daly Tyne and Wear.

Really great
This is an excellent support for your learning this set of taiji movements. Lam really knows his stuff. The video doesn't go into certain particulars that would help a person understand the movements, or any of the martial applications that would give insight into their purpose which might aid learning how to do them, but still good. I studied for two years with a skilled teacher many years ago and this is a great refresher for a nicely "edited" 40 forms as an alternative to the 108 forms I learned back then. All the same moves are in it, just removing excess repetition. It feels right. Please be aware this is not a substitute for a in-person training, which will help you understand and refine your moves and feel more confident. Still, it would be a very good start and support. I looked at a lot of dvds and this one stands out. I also like the Yang style, which is what I learned 33 years ago. Lam's demonstrations of the form are beautifully flowing, like a piece of fabric waving about in gentle ocean swells.

It is easy to locate exactly which section you wish to view
The instructions are less lengthy and more precise than the 24 forms that I previously purchased. It is easy to locate exactly which section you wish to view. I am pleased with my purchase.
