The Rosemary Tree

Sweet, old fashioned love story addresses several types of love. A great family story!
I loved the way just enough description is provided to set the scene for each segment. I found the segments dealing with the children fully as interesting as the intertwined loved stories of the adults, including the young adult teacher. I found it easy to enter into their (the characters) world and feel their emotions. Longish, but a good, Clean read. A sweet relief after all the current romances, mysteries, and paranormal seem to believe that foul language and explicit sex are required to fill out the book. If you have sufficient action going on I guarantee your readers will arrive at the end wondering how they got there without a sexual encounter or bad language. Bad language is a sign of a limited vocabulary! The Rosemary Tree is a true treasure for a multitude of ages of at least puberty on up.

A beautiful book
Very old fashioned, and very uplifting . Not a book for the young maybe. I find all of her books very comforting

Pure joy
I loved Elizabeth Goudge when I was a teenager. Somehow my local library, which boasted many sturdy volumes by this author, did not possess "The Rosemary Tree." The magical descriptions, lovable characters, beautiful expositions of Christian faith, that are typical of Miss Goudge, are all here. Not for the cynical or modern-hearted.

Classic Goudge
beautiful descriptions of rural England in mid twentieth century. Animals who are characters as important as the humans. Strong spiritual element

Fantastic story
I have always been an Elizabeth Goudge fan and this book is one of her best. Her book looks in to the dynamics of humans living out their lives and trying to find meaning in the universe. Ms. Goudge always helps us see the beauty of the world and a spiritual relationship with it and GOD as the solutions to the aches and pains...physical and emotional...of life.

warm, thoughtful, beautiful
Elizabeth Goudge's character development not only allows readers to better understand her characters, but traces the development of their characters - how fear can be overcome, how grace and kindness can grow. And this in a glorious English countryside setting.

Every word, every sentence is a balm on a troubled psyche.
I bought this earlier in the year to save for what one might term a Rainy Day; that's to say, a day when I have hit emotional rock bottom with depression and need something that I know will be enthralling and also lift me out of my dark space. This week, such a day came about, and I furtled around in my pile of unread books, and extracted The Rosemary tree and began reading. Every word, every sentence is a balm on a troubled psyche. If you want a novel full of action, this is not for you. It's a gentle book of depths you seldom find in modern novels, and there is always redemption at the core of Goudge's books. Some might mistake it for sentimentality but it's far from sentimental and actually deals with some difficult issues.

Perfect dip into a bygone era
I have recently rediscovered Elizabeth Goudge's books, having enjoyed her work when a child, I'm now thoroughly absorbed by her adult stories. The Rosemary Tree is set in the immediate years after WW2 when beautiful houses cost only £3000 - if only they still did! and when little villages were still in touch with the past century and young men were suffering from post traumatic stress disorder from their war experiences, though they didn't know it was called that. I'm not a Christian but Goudge's ability to connect the beauty of everything living thing to a spiritual plane touches me deeply and still resonates today. She is an expert on the human mind and the battles within. Some of her prose is exquisite. Loved it.

My Favourite Novelist
I've always loved Elizabeth Goudge's books - she's been my favourite author for almost five decades and they're novels I've re read several times over the years. I was delighted to find them available on Kindle, as they've often been out of print and I've had to acquire copies from charity shops. They're a refreshing change and wonderfully evocative in terms of description of the natural world. There's a spiritual depth and vision to her writing and depiction of her characters that stand the test of time. I look forward to more in future eg. her autobiography, The Joy of the Snow

The Gentleness of a Former Age
Elizabeth Goudge takes the reader into a gentle, more ordered world. Athough there is pain and sorrow in the end there is redemption for past faults and perceived character defects. We always judge ourselves more severely. This is a beautifully described and I can recommend it heartily.
