Good mic, high quality
Very good mic, but sent back because it’s not the type that I needed.

Clearly, one of the best microphones I have ever used!
Unboxing this microphone was a delight! With its glistening chrome body and the rich gold screen, it was a sight to behold! I have always desired a ribbon mic, but was afraid that it would not be useful for a communications application. Boy, was I mistaken. I have this beauty hooked up to my mixing board, into my 10-11 meter radio through a home built interface box. It has a warmth that people can hear immediately and they tell me that it sounds exactly like my voice, like I'm standing there next to them.It is mounted to a low profile boom arm which handles the weight of the mic perfectly. It's the right weight and I love the retro styling of the vintage "pill" microphone. I am using the mic strictly for communications use because I can't sing, or play an instrument, so for my application, it is perfect! The price was a pleasant surprise, as ribbon mics are rather pricey. You want quality? You normally have to pay for it. This R77 by MXL is extremely affordable and it will be a part of my communications setup from now on! Way to go, MXL!!

Recommend a decent preamp (something like a Cloudlifter CL-1) in ...
Absolutely sublime sound - I used this on vocals and stock audio interface preamps. I did have to turn my pream gain to 100% in order to get a decent signal for vocals, which raised the noise about 25dB. Recommend a decent preamp (something like a Cloudlifter CL-1) in addition to your audio interface if you're preamps aren't up to task. That said, this is not the fault of the mic!Finish is 100% class, and it shipped with white gloves to handle the mic without getting finger prints all over it. Wood storage box is very nice, although mine had a small knick in one side (not a deal breaker) and the velvet lining has threads starting to unravel inside and the velvet layer on the lid seems like the glue could have been done better (again, not a deal breaker but worth mentioning).I got the Lundahl transformer version and it's worth the upgrade. Recordings are noticeably better sounding than the stock Chinese transformer.Highly recommend the R77L from MXL - it's solid, feels great in your hands, has a classic look, and even more classic sound, and just exudes class in your studio. Vocalists will love looking at this!

Perfect for Brass Recording
Very good mic, especially for the money. I use it to record my trombone playing and it does a great job at capturing a smooth, compact, natural sound. Holds up very well at loud dynamics and smooths out the top end well. Just make sure you get a good ribbon mic preamp, as the output will likely be too soft.

Great Deal, Needs Good Preamp
Very, very nice microphone for voices, horns, guitar amps, anything that may sound a little harsh in a condenser mic. Good price, although I am going to buy a mic preamp that specifically has a setting for ribbon mics -- not very much gain. But a great ribbon mic for the money.
