As beautiful as it is brilliant!
I'd give this 5 stars, even if it were shot as an ordinary film, but the incredible method of animating each frame makes it a one-of-a-kind adventure of watching a story told by moving, evolving oil paintings. Absolutely recommended!

Not Just Beautiful, But Also a Compelling Storyline
This is an excellent, interesting video in multiple ways. Yes, the filming technique is unique and beautiful, but the story is also revealing and intriguing. Even the credits, showing the actors in costume compared to picture Van Gogh painted of them, keep you watching. A dazzling visual and historical spectacle. Highly recommended.

If there was an option for 6 stars, I would give it.
One of the most amazing movies I've ever seen in my life. The fact that it took 6 years and 65,000 paintings is staggering to even contemplate. Keep that in mind as you watch, you will be even more awestruck. This is no regular movie, its a piece of artwork chiseled from marble over 6 years. Every scene is like an amazing piece of artwork. You can pause your TV and have 65,000 different amazing paintings to display in your living room. I kept pausing the movie just to study and admire multiple scenes. A brilliant concept, a compelling story, infinitely watchable. I felt I understood Vincent better than any other movie has managed to do. I am a certified Movieholic, and I decided if you don't think this movie deserves 5 stars and should've won an Oscar, then I don't care about your opinion of any movie ever made.

Starry Starry Night
This is an animated film that is not aimed at children, it tells the story of Armand Roulin who at the behest of his father is trying to deliver a letter from Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo this leads to a series of interviews with people who knew Vincent in the months before his suicide as Roulin tries to find someone to whom he can deliver his letter. But what makes this film astonishing is its style Armand Roulin actually existed and was painted by Van Gogh and it is the Roulin of the portrait who goes on this journey where he meets other subjects of Van Gogh's portraits. All these characters are animated as if they were painted by Van Gogh and the country side, cities and buildings are all as if they are by Van Gogh so you see the swirls and brush strokes of a Van Gogh in the animation its as if the story is occurring in a world created by Van Gogh. In between there are black and white animation to explain parts of the story where no Van Gogh pictures to tell the story. There are also excellent voice performances from Aiden Turner, John Sessions, Chris O Dowd and Douglas Booth. This all makes for a fascinating, astonishing and different piece of animation that will probably reward more than one viewing.

I love vincent the painter
work like no other, though I am not sure it works. the wonderful painterly technique used in the animation is staggering, however it does remove all nuance from the actors' work - at times the movement of the figures reminds me of a very cheap cartoon by Hanna-Barbara. This is in part due to the fact that Vincent painted 'flat' pics. He made no effort to disguise the 2 dimensional space he was working in, as a consequence when figures move 'into ' the landscape it looks very awkward. Similarly the figures do not really stand out from the background. It gives the film a strangely unreal look, which rather negates the use of real actors. The art work is staggering the way it bring to life in context the works of Vincent. My self I would have preferred a 'real life action film, with subtlety, nuance and more variety of emotion,, tone and lighting.A great idea - though the script is lacklustre.

delightful unique presentation of the Vincent story
This is genuinely unique. Its an account of Vincents last months told mostly by the Postmasters son, with all the characters and scenery rendered by a team of artists into painted images, with the brushstrokes and style of VVG. It thus becomes a hand painted "cartoon" but this is actually successful in conveying the feel of Vincent's intense emotional paintings, so that the whole story comes to life in a wonderfully satisfying way. This has jumped straight onto my 10 best films of all time list. This Polish edition has a charming book of scenes that may have been in the film, as paintings, although the book text is all in Polish - but I loved the pictures..

Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL, must see for art lovers and animation viewers alike!!!
I have just watched this. It was movingly, hauntingly beautiful and even the paintings of the opening credits were completely enthralling. I've not watched such a touching film in a very long time and I can not recommend it highly enough - especially to others who love art, and especially those who love his art. BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! It will be regular viewing for sure. The artists who lovingly painted each frame can take great pride in knowing they have done Vincent proud. Thank you, all who had a hand in it.

Loving Vincent DVD Review - 4.5 stars
The world's first fully oil hand-painted animated film; that centres around the life and death of painter Vincent Van Gough.I really enjoyed this, admittedly it took a while for my eyes to adjust to the film's colour palate. As a film this really does work; and makes you think. The A-Star cast of Actors, helps the film dialogue flow seamlessly - although there are a mixture of dialects, none of the actors are actually French. A must for Art Lovers, those who love detective/crime stories and independent films. I will watch again for sure. 4.5 stars
