Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change

Absolutely outstanding.
I just finished a 10 day silent retreat. This book is utterly phenomenal. Every page to be savoured. This fabulous woman brought me to Buddhism and keeps me here too. I left this book out for my fellow retreatants when I had finished it and it was constantly in some ones hands throughout the retreat. They spoke of the wisdom contained in the pages and how helpful to their practice.. at the end of the retreat of course when we could talk again. So much metta to you Pema- sister in the dharma. Thank you

Powerful stuff
Decided to give this book a go after reading other reviews and was not disappointed. Very interesting and challenging. I realised that on one level I am already practising some elements of at ,east two of the commitments. I like the fact that it is okay to 'fail' 'recognise' 'hit reset' 'start again' Easy to follow writing style and some great little quotes and bit size exercises to get you started and keep to your path....

Insightful
Pema Chodron writes in a very accessible way, but what she says is very insightful. Living Beautifully is the second book of Pema's that I have read and I can say that what she says has made quite a big difference to how I deal with day-to-day living. Pema is a Buddhist, but I find no conflict in her writings with my own Christian beliefs. A very good and useful book.

smoking and oatmeal
Seemed to me to subtly promote smoking. I don’t believe smoking can be compared to liking or not liking oatmeal (P105 - P107), and is Enlightenment really like “hearing a bugle or smelling tobacco for the first time”(P104)?On re-reading the book; smoking never seems to appear in the same category as other negative activities, even fairly tame ones like watching TV or surfing the internet (P6) and is not classed with other clinging activities that can hook people like food and alcohol or even shopping (P10)."Smoking is smoking" and "oatmeal is oatmeal" (P107) right .

How we can change a sword into a flower
One of the finest spiritual books I have read....and I have read many. It is inclined to Buddhism but it can be applied to our everyday life. How we can change a sword into a flower.

Lovely
Can't beat Pema; as usual she writes with humour; giving personal accounts which helps you relate the buddhist principles to daily life. She never gets too heavy on the buddhist teachings so it's very applicable to today.
