Q: Why does this say it's flannel, when it's obviously velour?

Perhaps something was lost in translation... The robe is made from polyester fleece / velour, not flannel. The fabric is very pleasant next to the skin but does not absorb water well (in case you are planning to use this as a bathrobe).

Q: Is the burgundy of this robe a deep true burgundy or more of a red as in the picture?

Can't speak to the true color of the robe, but the quality and comfort is beyond. I wear mine at least once a day. Christy Frank

I have ordered three of these robes and they are NICE. My husband is 6 foot even and under 200 pounds but has broad shoulders. I ordered him an XL and it's great. The sellers actually ask your height and weight when you order to make sure you get the correct size. There is also a chart if you scroll down under the item description that gives the dimensions for each size. I hope this helpful. They are great and wash up very nice too with no piling. Enjoy!!
