Good read but is designed as a series part not a stand alone.
This is an well written journey that sets up lots of intrigue and alot of memoriable character moments. As this is a series you do not get the pay off for the intrigue here in alot of parts. Ed Greenwood experience and love for the craft is on full display. Showing a play ground any writer would love to play in.

Fun read. As usually the author surprises you with excellent twists and turns while staying true to characters of yore. Enjoy the book!

Boring and not much happened
This book starts and ends the exact same way, nothing changed from the start til the end of the book in anything that matters. Sure people died, the same people who you just brought up in the book, so the people you didnt know lived at the start of the book, didnt live at the end of the book, again, ends same way as it starts. The entire book can be broken down into leaving and going back to the castle multiple times, over and over. If you are ok with that, then do go on. But I would prob read the last 5 pages of this book then move on to next book in series, because that would give you as much information as you need to go to next book.

Mage is ornrier than cockroackes...
Kill Elminster.Right.And end world hunger while you're at it!The villain of the piece will just never get it; when a god(dess) tells you to work with her champion, it's generally a good idea to do so. Particularly when that champion is the most powerful mage in the world.Awesome book, which was purchased to replace the one I checked out from the library, and promptly lost. Which, of course, I found after taking this one to the library...(sigh), oh well!

pick it up!
I have always been a big fan of the forgotten realms books! Especially R.A. Salvatore and his amazing dark elf! But when I picked up other books based in faerune I noticed that elminister popped up everywhere! So I started with Ed greenwoods first book about the crafty old sage of shadowdale and couldn't put it down! Elminister and mystras chosen are amazing characters and great reads! I suggest you get your time line and start from book 1 I promise you won't regret it!

not too bad
This book, simply put, wasn't too bad. I recommend reading it and accepting it for what it is. I use the word, it, because I have no intelligent way to describe the book.Things happen suddenly, Elminster does what he does best, many special guest appearances, questions aren't answered, and the book ends.

It was good but.........
I felt he jumped arround too much. He also spent to much time in detailing blood & gore. I don't mind blood & gore as long as I don't feel that this is all that the story is about.

Elminster in the Underdark
I love Ed Greenwood's writing style. Saucy and fun, and still manages to mix in anger, betrayal, hate, love, all the things that make a great story. Elminsters continuing story and the inner workings of his mind, and how he worries and frets and starts to lose hope makes great reading

Got what I was expecting
Having read some of the other books in the series I didnt have massive expectations, consequently I wasnt disappointed.Really these are intended for a less "mature" reader (either in age or reading ability)Overall its a bit of shame as Ed Greenwood is mostly a better author than this would suggest.Reminds me of the "paint commercial - does what it says on the tin"
