Sydenstrickers Excellent JD OEM Source AMT469 Brake Safety Switch Installation Instructions X590 JD
The switch arrived on time and as ordered...note that the delivery was during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak which is further testimony for the reputation of the vendor. I checked switch with my multi-meter to be sure and it was fine. I highly recommend Sydenstrickers for JD OEM parts.I could not find instructions on installation of this brake safety switch anywhere on the internet for the John Deere X590 so I am going to post it here since I always take notes for future reference anyway. I will post pictures as well if allowed.AMT 469 Brake Safety Switch Installation on JD X590John Deere engineers decided that riveting this somewhat hard to reach part to a bracket welded to the frame would discourage most home owners from attempting the $10 repair themselves and haul it to the dealer for a nice $200 payday. Despite the near impossibility of finding repair info on the internet and the appearance of this being a major league PITA, it is a simple 20 to 30 minute repair. If your tractor won’t start and you have eliminated the obvious battery and fuse problems, its time to check the safety switches. Once you’ve eliminated the seat and RIO safety switches, you will want to check the least obvious of the three, the parking brake SS. This switch is located on the X590 on a black bracket welded to the frame directly below the parking brake underneath the right side foot rest. It will be pretty obvious when you look beneath the foot rest from the front right side of the tractor (see photos). As mentioned, it is riveted to the top of that bracket in a position such that when the brake is depressed upon starting, moving it forward depresses the button switch energizing the two circuits (ignition and another safety switch I believe) which allow the engine to turn over. If its not working you may have a bad switch or the housing may have cracked or broken allowing the switch to move backwards or out of the contact area of the brake pedal. Either way, you’re down there so determine the cause and replace the switch if necessary.1) Remove the wiring harness from the rear of the AMT 469 switch. Clean it and reset the harness. Try to start the mower again. If you still get nothing, pull the harness and using two male spade jumpers, jump the two sets of female spade sockets (closest together or over and under as attached to switch…check continuity if you are uncertain rather than blowing a fuse). If jumping the two circuits allows the motor to start, the AMT469 switch is almost certainly the problem. Order the OEM John Deere part from Amazon AMT469 ($10) and make sure you have TWO ¾” long 3/16” bolts with FOUR nuts and TWO washers. You will NOT want to rivet the thing in there again.2) If the mounting part of the plastic switch with the two holes is broken off or the switch is hanging loose, it’s actually a good thing. It makes it easier to take your multi-tool or a hacksaw blade and saw or grind off the top or bottom of both rivets. These rivets are soft aluminum and cut through easily as butter. Once you’ve sawn off the top or bottom, tap the rivet through the bracket and/or what remains of the switch and clean all the debris off of your deck so it doesn’t find its way into the spindle bearings somehow.3) Using the two bolts, nuts and washers, mount the new switch in the black bracket mounting holes with the button facing REAR and the four male spade connectors facing FRONT. I put the bolts with the washer on the head side down through the holes and threaded the nuts on the top as it seemed easier to see what I was doing. Once you have that tightened down, using a little thread lock, put the second two nuts on the bolts and tighten them down into the thread lock against the first two tightened nuts. The mower deck creates a lot of vibration and you don’t want bolts, nuts and washers coming loose and dropping onto your operating deck. Reconnect the wiring harness and you should be good to go.
