I started with the butterfly series had to know how It all started. You’ll find yourself crying, laughing, cussing, hoping, and even being angry. It’s just that good. I fell in love with the Atkins and ethic. It’s crazy how cycles repeat.

Worth the Wait
I heard about this book from a friend on Facebook in 2014 and decided to buy it. Unfortunately, I didn't start reading this book until 2021. When I first started reading, I thought it was another book that glamorizes drug dealing and only focuses on money. Instantly, I realized this story was much deeper when I was introduced to Raven Atkins. She was the daughter of Flint, Michigan Kingpin, Benjamin Atkins. A typical teenager who thinks she knows it all. Her parents had done everything to shelter Raven, but she craved the streets. Unfortunately, it just makes Raven want to rebel and grow up faster.Raven wants a guy like her father, but he prefers Raven to get a college degree and marry a guy, not into the street life. The 17-year-old falls in love at first sight with Ethic, a boss and a business partner of Benjamin. She is always trying to come off as tough and acts as if she has everything under control. In actuality, Raven is naïve and easy to manipulate. Ethic thinks Raven has a smart mouth and is too young. He always talks about how the wrong woman has been the downfall of many good men. Ethic will not commit to just any woman or jeopardize his daughter’s future. For some reason, he keeps raising his children as a single father.Raven’s mom, Justine, gave quite a few good quotes in this book. When Raven came home after a night of hanging out with an older guy and smoking a blunt laced with cocaine, Justine said “Divas don’t smoke. You leave that to the men. As long as you conduct yourself like a lady then everyone around you will have to treat you like one.” Very true words.A Moth to a Flame is a story that deals with real life issues. It shows the importance of making the right decisions. You only get one life, and it does not take much to destroy it. One bad decision can change the course of your life. You can have a promising future one day and be doomed the next day. This story shows how men take young and impressionable women and trick them into being loyal. It was surprising that Raven had no loyalty to her father and chose Mizan over him. I don’t know if Raven was ever supposed to win. It is so much bad juju or karma going around for all parties involved. You heard of the saying “Behind every great fortune is an equally greater crime.” Benjamin had to kill people and commit other immoral acts to make it to the top. Ethic and Mizan also had to commit similar acts to become top in the game. Raven started a relationship built on an immoral act.Karma has a way of coming back to get you no matter how long it takes. Some parts of the story were confusing, and maybe I did not understand the game. When Raven decided to leave home, I expected Benjamin to drag her back home. Ethic even went to the house and nicely asked Raven to come back. I guess Benjamin thought she would learn her lesson and come back home immediately, but that did not happen.Later in the story, Mizan forces a pregnant Raven to return with him to Flint. It just amazed me that Ethic did not question anything and didn’t put up a fight when Raven told him the baby was not his and she was going back to Mizan. I expected Ethic to personally go back to Flint and get Raven. It is kind of ironic that when Ethic finally tries to take out Mizan it goes deadly wrong.Justine was a powerful voice in this story, and she gave so much game. She understood the life she chose could end at any time. Justine also knew being married to a Kingpin meant that she may have to do time in prison one day. Raven did not understand her role when becoming wifey to Mizan. Justine was trying to explain to Raven that when you become wifey to a street dude, you will get hit and cheated on. It is all a part of the game, which is something that Benjamin and Justine did not want for their daughter.Nikki was the ultimate best friend to Raven. She was a listening ear, supported Raven, and always came when she called. Unfortunately, you can get caught up in other people’s troubles. Nikki was just collateral damage in a lot of situations involving Raven. You should choose your friends wisely because you are the people you surround yourself with.It was surprising to see Mizan commit unforgivable offenses and remain untouchable for so long. He must have been a powerful kingpin. I would have liked to know more about Mizan’s life when he became one of Flint's most powerful drug dealers, but the focus was more on his relationship with Raven. The title of the book is called A Moth to a Flame. One of the last things that Raven remembers her mom saying is “Don’t be the moth that flies into the flame.” Who is really the flame?!Maybe the street life is the flame. Raven realizes that street life is not it and comes with a price. Her attraction to the wrong things like men, lifestyle, drugs and making all the wrong decisions was her downfall.

Really good a read!
This book had me hooked. I hated Raven , felt sorry for her at times and at times I was indifferent. I wanted a happy ending but Mizan paid for his wickedness in the end, so I'm happy!

A must read
I'm not going to give a way any details or spoilers, but this is the fourth time I've read this book. So that's saying something. I fell in love with the character Raven and her sassy attitude which is something I could relate too. (She went through hell, and could never seem to catch a break)Though this is a sad story, it's an eye opener. Every young woman should read this book, and take from the message: Not every thing that glitters is gold, and don't try to grow up too fast. Enjoy your youth and listen to your parents, it may seem like they don't know what they're talking about but it in due time you'll find out that they know exactly what they're talking about! I loved ethic and hated Mizan. Would love to know if there would ever be a sequel?!
