Product description This is the film that walked away with Canadian Genie Awards in virtually every category, including Best Foreign Actor (Richard Farnsworth). Based on the real life legend of Bill Miner, "The Grey Fox" is the engaging story of Canada's "Gentleman Bandit." .com A pastoral turn of the century Western, The Grey Fox tells the story of an old-time stagecoach robber who, after 30 years locked away in prison, is released to a modern world he doesn't quite understand. He resumes his life the only way he knows how, by robbing, but since the days of the stagecoach are gone, he concentrates on holding up trains. Pursued by the private security force the Pinkertons, the elderly man known as the gentleman bandit develops a lore and a following all his own. Richard Farnsworth (The Natural) plays the lead, based on a true-life account, as a kind and thoughtful man who sees honor in what he does. Featuring some incredibly vivid cinematography of the Pacific Northwest and the classic steam engines that traversed its mountains, the film is an elegiac homage to a simpler time when honor and gentlemanly pursuits (even train robbery) were important. --Robert Lane

Finally, after decades they put on dvd
While it an awesome movie, still one of my all time favorites, the digital copy didn’t quite capture all that the original release had. Perhaps the conversion from original media to HD type Blu-ray produces that result? I’ve seen it happen before when you take a low res original and try to upscale it there is a feeling of washed out color depth - the information just isn’t there to produce the image quality on a 4K screen. But—-it exists and I can finally enjoy the wonderful acting, beautiful scenery and interesting storyline.

Great Movie (but not based on facts)
Read the biography of Bill Miner a few years ago. His actual life story makes for good reading. The movie is a long way off from his real background. But I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie as well.

Good one
Again, drawing a blank on details but remember I liked it for realistic story of the west based in fact and told well.

Difficult to like more artistic stylized film of that era of flims.
We watched this film with great interest and hope for it's delivery. BUT fell flat in many ways. The slow moving attributes of the film's acting wasn't the issue for us as much as the whole package. Even when it was made more than several decades ago we would not have really enjoyed any more. Fell flat for us overall. I know it's fiction and happy it was as I have mixed emotions when said badman gets away as they suggested he did in the end. Yes spoiler alert sorry. I try not to discuss the finer points of a movie in my reviews so as not to spoil for others. Forgive my slip. I thought most of the acting was decent but it was the delivery and feeling the film was attempting to present that was too artsy for us. I just turned 70 and husband is into his 80's but to say we don't enjoy fun films will we do. Bought the 22 Bond Movie films for hubby this year. And we own every Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Monster Inc's etc. Love them as they do move along and tell a story well. Two of my all time fav's of the 70's are the Reivers and Steve McQueens best ever acting though today a bit dated and more like a Disney escapade than in it's release period and also adore Goldie Hawn & George Segal in The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox. So though not uptight for our age group as can happen as we grow older and grow up both we appreciate really good story development and presentation. This movie lacked presentation. Though loved the bits of trains and scenery it too seemed to fall shorter than expectations and some of the more positive reviews led one to hope for. Maybe spoiled we are as we live smack in the Extreme NW Rocky Mountains in MT only 60'sh miles from Canada. Seventy eight percent of our county is public owned and so yes spoiled we are so perhaps that let us be a little less into what they panned as scenery. I recall many other movies who have done a far better job however on that score. Meantime I do not recommend the movie but also recognize we are all different as we should be. And reviews are personal comments and critic opinions good and bad and so for that I can not go under 3 stars but feel it could have far more to offer when it was made had it not tried so hard to be artsy. Think somehwere between this is so called reality folks verses silent movie kinda time and oh by the way here's our interpretation of those things which My grandparents born in late 1800's were not at all this slow or dim. And my grandparents in the 1915-20 era ran the SILENT movie theaters in Livingston MT and grandma played the organ and or piano. Grandpa worked on the NP railroad his entire career but at his wonderful lean 6'4" frame longed to be a baseball player even into his retirement years. Sorry but this film didn't seem real to me. People on the whole are not slow just because it was an earlier time not even 100 years ago. At least not the folk I knew who were still alive and kicking and argueing and enjoying life very much intelectually active into their 80's plus. And many would have been around the ages of the people protrayed in this film which just didn't ring true with real life in that day and in the telling of it.

Wonderful movie for a rainy day...
This movie has aged beautifully. It is touching and humorous and has just enough tension and intrigue to compliment the story. It is a love story and a crime story. It's not a cleaned up Western. It feels real. It is beautifully filmed and more delicate and patient than most Westerns. There is some violence and some brief sadness but the landing is pleasant and rewarding and you will miss the characters for a bit as you should with any great film.

Waited forty years for this to be released on DVD. Thankfully now available as a 4k restoration.
And it shows all the beauty of British Columbia and every crag and crease in Richard Farnsworth's expressive face. What a great actor, so little used or recognized over his film career, starring in this great Canadian north-western. How about a double feature with this film followed up by the "The Straight Story"? Reward yourself.A little movie trivia: Harry Dean Stanton was originally slated to play Bill Miner, but due to a conflict had to bow out - not before recommending Richard Farnsworth for the role in his stead. The two would later appear as brothers in "The Straight Story" - a relationship that one might well imagine was very close to real life.

Great movie now restored!
The Gray Fox is a super movie. You find yourself rooting for him even though he is a crook. Richard Farnsworth is outstanding in this role and makes the gentleman bandit so likeable you don't want him to get caught. The new restoration of the movie is outstanding. I have watched it many times. While watching the new version I noticed a number of things that I had never seen before. The lighting is much better and the picture is so clear. The outstanding scenery in B.C. never looked better. Scenes like the one where he buys the gun are so much clearer it was as if I had never seen them before. A number of bonus items and commentary are also included. I highly recommend this video.

A small, brilliant gem of a film....
There is so much I could say about this movie but I won't. A Canadian film released in 1982 based on the later life of a bankrobber. The script, the photography, the direction, the music, the acting, all are first class. It is a period piece set around the early 20th century. This special edition version is the very first time it has been released on dvd. I have no idea why the long wait but it is worth it. There are literally thousands of people the world over who have been longing for its release onto dvd. I am so pleased to be able to buy this now.
