Room Service - The Complete Series

A Proper Turkey from the man who created Dad's Army
I bought this DVD because the 'Room Service' series was created and written by Jimmy Perry, a writer who I have much love for thanks to his work with David Croft creating and co-writing four classic BBC comedies: Dad's Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Hi-de-Hi! and You Rang M'Lord. These are without doubt among the best British sitcoms ever written and Jimmy Perry should be fondly remembered and applauded for them. He won't, however, be well-remembered for 'Room Service', a solo project of his which turned out to be a pretty painful watch, despite an arguably strong cast. The humour is rather overplayed, possibly in the desperate hope of wringing laughs out of desperately unfunny material (proof, I suspect, that Perry really needed Croft, and vice-versa), and a great deal of it feels dated in a way that the Perry/Croft 'time capsule' comedies don't. 'Room Service' maybe suffers from its contemporary setting, and most of the humour is of the 'slap and tickle' type and is about as funny as seeing your granny getting run down by a bus.The DVD itself - issued by cult TV legends Network - presents the episodes and the original, unbroadcast pilot version with a slightly different cast, as well as can be expected, and probably better than the material deserves. For completists only.

the 1970s
I like the 1970s as I was young and also there was some good programs around, but this is funny to a point in bits of it,that's all I find now when getting some of the old stuff which I did not think.I find slapstick funny when its not with sexist overtones.I find that there were so many programs years ago trying to be funny by showing women sparsely dressed and I rather see something that is funny without the smut.

Great.
I bought this simply due to the fact that Bryan Pringle was in it I was not disappointed it also featured a young Mathew Kelly. Set in the room service derpartment of a top London hotel and the different team of workers . A shame it only ever got one series

Boring
Not so good, I think I watched the first 2 episodes before hitting eject, I just didn't find it funny or entertaining which is rare for me as I like most classic and current British sitcoms
