I bought this to replace a standard rectangle butter dish with no handle or knob on top. That dish had a terrible design, because when I went to lift the lid with wet or slippery hands (like during cooking) the smooth featureless top would slide right out of my fingers. It was difficult to get the dish open and only a matter of time before I dropped and broke the lid. It was time to look for a new one.I always wondered why people had these cow butter dishes. They're kind of kitschy, right? But it's because the cow shape is ideal for handling while slippery, because the cow's "belly" and the head and horns have shapes that give plenty of grip even if my hands are buttery or oily or wet. It's easy to lift the lid and get the butter I need with one hand while holding the lid securely in the other. No more fumbling with the dish when I need a a couple of tablespoons of butter during cooking!It's a well-made dish on its own merits, the porcelain is thick and heavy so it protects the butter and keeps it fresh and the finish is nice and smooth. It's a cute dish and it looks nice on the counter. But it's the cow shape and the ease of grip that it offers (esp if you are older and have arthritic hands like me) that makes it so much better to use than a regular butter dish with a totally smooth lid or just a tiny knob to grip.Very pleased with this!

Goes well in my cabin. Easy to clean and use

This butter dish is adorable while still being functional. It is a little large, but that's a sacrifice I am willing to make. It holds one regular stick of butter just fine. Only thing to be careful of is that you center the butter on the plate or else you end up with butter in the cows butt that you have to clean out.

I love this. I bought it because it was cute and went with our farmhouse theme, and was more pleased to see one like it on the Big Bang Theory in Amy's kitchen (I'm a fan). Which it's not dishwasher safe, which is a bummer, it's still fairly easy to clean in the sink and seems pretty durable. If you're looking for a super practical every day butterdish, this probably isn't it. If you're wanting something cute for display or to use occasionally to brighten up you kitchen, this is perfect.
