SU-85 and SU-100 on the Battlefield (World War Two Photobook Series)

This is totally a picture book and includes both well detailed and poor quality photographs
This is another of Neil Stokes most appreciated works on Soviet armor. This is totally a picture book and includes both well detailed and poor quality photographs. The less than clear examples are mostly from Soviet era takes and are of prototypes or rare scenes. This is not a criticism, just a fact. Admittedly, some of them I personally would not have included myself (because of repetition). But I feel they are more than made up for by Mr. Stoke's inclusion of high quality, informative pictures for the SU and Soviet armor enthusiast and scholar. This is a book for the person that is wishing for more photos of these brutal and efficient looking tank destroyers than has been available before. These are all WWII (Great Patriotic War) scenes, with nothing post war shown. Also, Neil does not present any charts, graphs, plans, or anecdotes and stories. Hopefully, in the future, Neil will have more for us in that area. It is to be expected that the photos that were available to Mr. Stokes would be limited in number and quality. There have been very few pictures floating around in western books of these two SUs until now. A fair amount of the photos are of destroyed examples, always a favorite of fans. If the SU is your interest, I think you will be pleased. I was.

A concise, well done volume.
This is a picture book. There are 6 pages of introductory text, 3 in Hungarian & 3 in English. The remaining 100 pages have a pic a page with captions noting production changes & often location as well as unit. The book is arranged chronologically from early '43 to summer of 1945. Most of the pictures are unknown to me & run the gamut from prototype thru factory pics to combat & finally to knocked out vehicles. When first skimming thru the book I wasn't too impressed due to the poor quality of many photographs. On a more thorough reading the pictures, while not all are crystal clear & focused, do show enough detail to be very useful. Historically there isn't much, in English, out there to work with on these vehicles. The author provides a good look at the various incarnations of this not uncommon AFV in a concise, well done volume.

Happily it is far better than the T34 book
I have the T34 book in the same series and was a bit dissapointed with the text in that book so i was in two minds whether to get this book or not but given the lack of books on these vehicles I decided to buy it. Happily it is far better than the T34 book. The Photos and text are informative and interesting. Only thing stopping it from getting five stars was that the text is at times a bit repetative. All in all a worthwhile purchase.
