Nice treat...
...after the Deadland Drifters series. Alpha was an interesting character, a bit of House mixed with Monk and Mentalist, all packaged into his 14 year old mind. With these types of characters, extra care has to be taken to ensure the characters stay consistent both in their mannerisms and motivations. Chaney did a good job making sure Alpha was believable, stay true as events unfolded around him, and also managed to make him somewhat likeable. As for the story itself, it was a good vehicle to introduce Alpha and the recruitment process of the Constables. Looking forward to the Constable's Return.

Good story!
I already hew about Alfonso from the Renegade series but was curious how he started out. The story starts really slow and I was starting to loose interest, but after several chapters I began to understand where the author was steering me. I truly enjoyed reading this story and Iโm going to download load the next right now:)

Alphonse's origins
While Alphonse is at school, he observes things and understands a great deal about people. So much so he informs the headmaster his wife is cheating on him after seeing her for less than a minute. This unsettled the headmaster so he is moved to another school, but just before is interviewed by the strange Mr. Black. At the new school he makes friends with Vance who gets him to leave the school grounds at night and go about the town where he sees something intriguing. He investigates and discovers some interesting people.... and thenproceeds to investigate puzzles and have adventures... Mr Black will return before the end... But who is he???

Backstory that's as good as the main storyline!
This is a great book. It's basically a retrigrade backstory on a character in Chaney's Renegade Star series. While Al originally entered the storyline as an antagonist, he's become a valuable part of Jace's team. This story starts with Al as a young teen basically sent off to boarding school by his absentee parents. The schoolmasters soon learn that the precocious kid - with his uncanny observational skills - is more than they can handle. Great insight into a well written, and hugely enigmatic, character.

A well written prequel telling us about Alphonse.
This is a prequel to the Renegade Star series. This book looks at what made Alphonse become a Constable. A very well written book that introduces us to the essential Alphonse. Not as much action as in some of the other books, but it held my interest to read it in a single sitting. Understand that less action does not mean little or no action. I hope Mr Chaney continues to write about the backstory of other major characters in the Renegade Star Universe.I did find one major formatting error, reported it and assume most readers will never see it.

Different
Sort of like Mycroft Holmes, Alphonse looks at data and takes verbal description and turns it into decoded plans or goals. He is more active than Mycroft, but not so much as Sherlock at first. As time passes he becomes more involved in his plans. Resourceful and goal oriented, he makes successful plans but is largely divorced from their effect on people until his limited circle of acquaintances becomes broken by deceit. Suddenly he sees a human side. Interesting coming of age story. I liked it.

OK
History lesson about what it takes to be a constable with the Union and what the job needs to happen

Kept my interest
I read for diversion to keep my mind off things, this was entertaining, characters developed, in a way predictable but not like so many books with good ratings that start out okay but wander out into left field, interjecting far-flung ideas and I wonder about the ratings. I would like more violence and language, but this was what it was and I enjoyed.

Good background but misses some Renegade elements
Some good insight into where Alphonse comes from and explains where he learned his skills but was hoping to see more of the constable training itself. Also missed the other characters from the renegade series as donโt think the relationships in this book worked as well as in the Renegade series

Well that took me by surprise...
Loved it! A strong story and, if youโve read any of the Renegade series, a familiar figure. A great back story with loads of twists and turns. J.N. Chaney shows us his talent in this book, Iโd highly recommend it.

Try it you may enjoy it.
Try it you may enjoy it. I personally did not. But I am not a fan of detective storys. The plot and the writing are excellent so if you like detective story's you will enjoy.
