Foraging the Ozarks: Finding, Identifying, and Preparing Edible Wild Foods in the Ozarks (Foraging Series)

Very well organized and full of good info
First and most importantly, the first entries in the book are those NOT to eat. So, newbies to foraging can start out with a foundation of what to avoid and WHY before journeying out and just nibbling on things randomly. I would have liked this section to be fleshed out more though. For example, it would have been incredibly helpful to have several side-by-side photos showing how to tell the difference between the various edible grape species and the toxic moonseed. Wild Hyacinth (edible) vs Death Camas (HIGHLY toxic). Wild leeks (edible) vs. False Hellebore (HIGHLY toxic). But it's a good start and the author does repeat everywhere possible the mantra "unless identification is 100% positive, do not consume!"I would have liked more info on the nutrient content of the various plants, and would have been willing to spend more on such a comprehensive book with everything needed in one spot. Overall, though, it's a very good book and the information not here can easily be found online. When out foraging though, one doesn't usually have internet access, so having it all in one book would have made this an INVALUABLE region-specific resource. Each entry tells you what part of the plant is edible, then gives a plant description and a section on how to use the plant. Then there is a section on where the plant can be found and, finally, a "Warnings/Comments" section. I think it would have been better to separate that section out into two. If there are no known warnings, that section could have just said "none known".There are also recipes with some entries. So, while not perfect, it's a darned good atart and should prove very helpful for anyone wanting to forage in the Ozarks.

Fun reference guide
A fun guide to foraging. Take it with you on a walk and discover all the edibles you would normally walk past unnoticed.
