Scream 4 Marco Beltrami

A Return to the Original
At first listen, I was upset with most of the sounds I heard, even pairing them with the film. Being a big fan of the Scream series, and Marco's scores, I bought this promptly. Although, disappointed, it sat in its case alone in my back seat for weeks.I then ordered the Scream Deluxe Edition score, which is a re-release by Varese Sarabande that includes the entire score from the original. The nostalgia hit, and I realized a lot of the sounds Beltrami used in Scream 4 were re-hashes of things he used very little of in the original. As for the synthesizer sounds he incorporated, I believe he parodied the films Scream 4 lampooned (remakes, torture porn) as the 'Woodsboro 2011' synth used sounds an awful lot like Charlie Clouser's style of composing he used in the Saw franchise. Bold, Ballsy and I give Beltrami props for it.It's a good listen, but as Varese Sarabande always does, the complete score is not intact (Scream and Scream 2 had to share a disc, until the aforementioned Deluxe Edition was released, and die hard fans of the series still search for the complete bootleg of Scream 2's nearly 90 minute score. Scream 3's score is nearly 50 minutes out of nearly 100 minutes of composed music) but is only missed 4 tracks that you can find online. I won't down grade the review based on VS's go-to when it comes to releasing scores short listed.

What did Marco do to his music?
I'm not sure what he did or why he did it, but the score sounds so artificial, as if performed on a synthesizer rather than by an actual orchestra. It gives the music a cheesy sound more akin to a lesser horror film rather than a Scream film, and that's a shame.Besides that, though, the score is effective enough in the movie, though don't expect many strong themes besides Sidney's. I was really looking forward to the chase scenes (Marco's strongsuit), but the dramatic underscore works better. It sounds like he phoned in the chases this time.

Fitting yes, but John Williams, it's not.
This is good music for the movie, but can one REALLY sit and just LISTEN to it, enjoying it for all its symphonic magnificence?HARDLY.

Best of the series
Out of all the Scream scores, this one rates as my favorite. Marco revisits a lot of recognizable themes from the first film, but finally (FINALLY!!) give Ghostface a real theme to call his own with You're Not Real. What a way to open a score, then to curtail right into Dewey's and Sid's themes (particularly Sid's throughout). Trouble in Woodsboro (from Scream 1) also gets a proper shoutout here and there, which is only fitting since Scream 4 went back to where it all started. The element of suspense is very prominent here in the sense that it takes its time getting to the good parts, the killing/chase sequences, etc, which is how the first score was. As soon as Which Closet? comes along, the pace picks up immediately and steadies itself out considerably well for the remainder of the album, leading up to high-anxiety bits like Don't Spoil It, I Got It Right and Your Ingenue Days Are Over. Don't Spoil It Part 2 is probably the scariest, strings section-shredding track on the album with Sidney's climactic fight with the killer, comparable to You're Not Real's blood-pumping opener. My only issue with the finale of the score is Sidney's Advice that should (according to the film's closing) stop right around 1:50 with Jill's theme crescendo-ing with the choir (in the film, this is the final frame shot of Jill's face before credits roll), after that is an extra 3+ minutes of score not used in the final cut of the film. I'm assuming it was part of the alternate ending seen on the dvd where Sid, Gale and Dewey are seen talking in Sid's sunlit hospital room after the killer's death. This score makes a welcome return to the enhanced element of fear felt in the beginning of the franchise. Kudos to Mr. Beltrami - should there be a Scream 5 (I personally hope there will be), I find it only fitting for him to return to helm the score.
