Knitter's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to the Principles and Techniques of Handknitting

A useful resource
When I get stuck with a pattern, or something I want to work out for myself, this book helps me find my way through the knots. The diagrams are good and the text is pretty comprehensive, though it sometime takes a bit of digging to get to the bit I actually need.

Great Reference Tool
The Knitter's Handbook is a comprehensive reference tool for basic and advanced knitting techniques. There are hundreds of these reference books out there, but this one is a gem among gems. I never knew there were so many ways to increase and decrease! Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Best of all, in addition to telling the reader *how* to do something, Stanley describes *why* we may want to do it - what the effect of such and such a stitch will be on the overall pattern, and the point of doing particular things. If nothing else, the price is worth it just for the hilarious photo of the knit skirt with pompoms along the hem.

Own it.
Carefully and logically organized reference guide composed by a master knitter who can communicate well. This is an essential for enthusiastic Knitters. It offers techniques you won't find in most other books. It's a classic you might find for a buck at garage sales.I don't like the way that numbered, like something out of some 50s engineering text (figure 1.3.15?) It's a minor issue. Adapt. It's essential to have books which you can understand to backup your existing store of knowledge. It's great if you know Kitchener Stitch, but what if you forget a step? There are often more alternatives to a particular technique then whichever one your teacher prefers. We all need options, and I love being able to expand my skill-set when it is convenient for me, not for whatever mumbling Russian YouTube contributor decides to post a fuzzy, poorly lit tutorial. Like paying for things I can teach myself from a book. Granted, I'm an autodidact, so it's easier for me to self teach from a book. But, even if you learn best from instructors, backup on your shelf. If you come across a problem do you want to have to drop your project until you can consult your teacher?I recommend this book, Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons-Hiatt, plus Debbie Stoller's 2 brilliant texts, Stitch 'n Bitch: the Knitters handbook and Stitch 'n Bitch: Superstar Knitting.

What a GREAT Reference!!
I am a new knitter, but this book offered a number of additions to my growing library. First it is no nonsense. The author knows her subject and gives almost a military directness to her wide range of instructions -- that could have been Reader's Digest editing, I am not sure. The book covers a vast array of technique. There are numerous ways to cast on and bind off related to the style of garment one is knitting. While a simple cast on may be commonly appropriate, having those additional techniques to really tighten up a specific design seems a plus to me. The instructions for various stitches and illustrations are clear and precise. Again the techniques covered for shaping are excellent. There are great sections on knitting with color and adding designs, stitch patterns. I also liked the finishing section which offered more information than any other reference book I have come across thus far. This book delivers what it sets out to provide. It is instructional - may a bit toward the advanced side, but it is all about "how to." The techniques offered here can be applied to the endless range of knitting options. And unlike some references I have come across, this one is NOT half pattern book. This is ALL reference! Wonderful. I highly recommend it.

The Real Honest Truth...
...is that I heard that this book is being discontinued and immediately bought two new copies so I'd have a lifetime supply. I am very hard on my own copy; it gets marked, dog-eared, photocopied; it's got coffee stains beyond counting. And in truth, the binding isn't especially strong.I must have more than a hundred knitting books, judging by shelf footage alone. More often than not, they are reference books rather than pattern compendia. This, along with the Barbara Walker Treasuries, is what I turn to most often, and with the most hope of finding what I need. The organization is a bit strange until you learn to work with it. The names of many techniques don't match what other experts call them. But who cares? Stanley's comments are so sensible and personal that any quirks are easily forgiven. For new and experienced knitters alike, this book is indispensable. The other one is Vogue Knitting, which is clearer and prettier but not as packed information, basic and esoteric. To me, the difference is: I respect Vogue Knitting (which is written by a committee) but I love Montse Stanley's book.

Not my first choice
I've been knitting for over 50 years and have numerous knitting books, some are well worn from constant use, some rarely leave the book shelf. After hearing other knitters rave about this book, I thought it would be a welcome addition to my library. Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations. I much prefer `Reader's Digest Complete Needlework Guide' (now out of print, but available online) and Katharina Buss' `Big Book of Knitting' for clear instructions and utilization of common nomenclature.

Missing pages from 125-144
Although a cable pattern is displayed on the cover of this book, the pages with cable instructions are missing. There are only two pictures of cable four back and cable four front with instructions on page 145. If you are interested in cable knitting, you might want to check elsewhere.

A Must have for knitters
I received this book as a gift a couple of years ago and showed it to another knitter friend of mine who is a new knitter. It only took her a few minutes to see that all the questions that she had in mind and we had discussed about knitting was clearly explained in this amazing book. This particular purchase was for her but I think it is a must have for all knitters of any level. My personal copy of this book is on my nightstand and I review something in it at least a couple times a week.

Plenty of Information
I'm fifty-fifty on this book. I like the unique information this book shares with its readers, it has a chock-full, but I don't care for the way the instructions are illustrated; each illustrations looks like a sketch and only has three colors, (white, black and a greyish-blue), not very colorful. Pictures are poor but the contents are rich. If you're new to knitting I would skip this one, definitely for the experienced knitter.
