I TIG'd these for vintage vise repair...
I used these for repairing a vintage Reed 205R vise. Someone had abused it pretty badly, and I wanted to fill in the gouges and grinder marks.I broke off all of the flux, and used my tig torch for the repair. It worked fine. The old cast iron did not really want to be TIG welded, and would sometimes pop and spit and start to melt away. I let it cool and try again... it worked out fine in the end.I did peen each short weld as I went. I also went pretty slowly in an attempt to avoid getting it too hot. No cracks or any issues at all.

Nickel rods are great for cast iron
Welded mild steel homemade bearing to cast iron hub on farm disk. Discovered on a forum that metal needs to be heated cherry red before welding, then must use nickel rod. This worked great for me. Cost per rod (about $2.30 for 14 rods) was very reasonable compared to other prices I checked.

When used properly they work very well.
You must properly preheat the weldment before welding. If you don't it will crack. This is when welding mild steel to cast iron.
