Wow...is an understatement.. I myself have been involved in the “beauty industry” for over 40 years and to read about Jim’s personal struggles to achieve success and greatness in this business, is nothing short of amazing.The messages I have received throughout this book is to never give up, never allow anyone or anything to derail your dreams. Keep moving forward, even if it is tiny steps at a time. The MAJOR and I mean MAJOR roadblocks thrown in Jim’s way, never stopped him. If Jim Markham can be this successful after the unbelievable events that occurred in his life, it gives me and will give you hope, that anything is possible, success is possible. God the Universe always has a plan and...our backs.Our JOURNEY might not be what we envisioned but a positive out come will be achieved. We have to travel that road.. no short cuts. I love the take aways and lessons that Jim learned stated, after each chapter.. I have already sent some of those words to friends of mine who are struggling, and I tell them this is advice from Jim Markham directly, he gets it, now buy the book, it’s a must read, a easy read. I couldn’t wait to continue into the next chapter and was sorry when your book ended!!This book applies to anyone, in any business. I have always been a fan of your shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments..in part, learning from your son Bob.Bob is so awesome, a great ambassador, teaching everyone about your incredible hair care line. Here in OC, I am sure many, many people have met and learned from Bob about the hair care line, like I have,,,little do they know about the incredible back story.Thank you Jim and Cheryl, and Bob, and everyone’s involvement with this true story and for your wonderful hair care products.OK,, movie next Jim!! Big Lucky by Jim Markham with Echo Montgomery Garrett is a fantastic read! I rated this book five stars for several reasons. The first being, I couldn’t put it down. As a person that loves biographies I will admit, in most of them there tends to be a lag spot or slow section. I am happy to say this book did not have one. The second reason is from the beginning I was drawn into his story so completely I wanted, no needed, to know what happened. This book, while non-fiction read very much like first person fiction and I am here for it. From his Hollywood connections to the multiple startups, Markham’s life is story worthy. It’s important to note here, that I appreciate his authenticity in his description of his past. As is the person portrayed in this book, he is not one to make excuses or get hung up on regret. The third and final reason I gave this a five star rating is because of the topic. Hair care is completely my thing. I adore various products and their scent is especially important to me. I was fascinated by Mr. Markham’s process in creating products and his ability to see a gap in market when there was one. I have the utmost respect for his commitment to producing a product that is not only top quality, but safe and eco-friendly. I highly recommend this book to biography lovers, hairstylists, and companies who are looking for a motivational book.

I loved “The Big Lucky”.I was lucky myself to have worked for Jim. A lot of Jim’s take away advice at the end of each chapter was familiar to me, as Jim would share his experiences and insight with family, friends and colleagues. Jim would say “you are made to win” or “you are tough as nails girl”. Since then I have walked into many meetings repeating those sayings in my head. Jim’s experience and advice made a lasting impact on me personally and professionally. His story exemplifies all the lessons he learned as he created one successful company after the next.I recommend this book as it’s a true account of an exciting time in the hair industry and gives real life advice shared by Jim’s experience and intuition on persevering through life’s challenges and what it takes to be successful in business and the importance of family and friends. He never gave up and that is a lesson we can all embrace.The “Big Lucky” is a captivating story about by a brilliant man with a lot of luck and an even bigger heart.

Full disclosure: Cheryl Markham is my sister, and Jim is my brother in law. That said, I learned so many new reasons to respect Jim’s (and Cheryl’s) successes. One big eye opener for me is that Jim is a gifted teacher, and that has been a compelling component of his success over the course of his carrier. Of course he is also a visionary, and has tremendous work ethic. I read the book because I wanted to see if there was anything in it that I didn’t already know. It turns out that while I lived through almost all of it on the periphery, many details got filled in for me. My takeaway is that Jim and Cheryl inspired me, as I am at a crossroads in my own life, and Jim reminded me, I’m designed to succeed. So, if you are on the fence deciding whether to read Big Lucky, JUST DO IT (to steal the NIke phrase) you won’t be disappointed and you will be greatly enriched. Best of all, you won’t expend any effort because the book reads itself for you. When you get to the last page, your only disappointment will be that it wasn’t longer.
