Q: The lead, what does HB stand for?

HB stands for Hard Black. There are two major scales for hardness and blackness of graphite (lead) pencils, the HB scale and the Numerical scale. These scales are graduated by the lightness or darkness of the marks left by a graphite pencil. The HB scale goes from 9H to 9B. The more H's the lighter the marks left by the pencil (harder lead). the more B's, the more bold and black the markings. HB grade is right in the middle, and is the most useful for everyday work. If you go softer/darker than HB in that grade system, the designation is in multiples of "B's". If you go lighter/harder than HB the designation is in multiples of "H's". In the Numerical scale, #2 is equivalent to HB. Sometimes on better pencils you might see the grades from both systems, but usually only both #2 and HB, the typical everyday writing lead "hardnesses". In the Numerical Scale, the higher the number the harder the lead and the lighter the markings. I sometimes use #1 lead pencils -- they make darker, more bold markings than HB. In my engineering education from the old days, we had to learn drafting skills, and each type of line on a drawing had to have an appropriate width and "blackness", so we used all sorts of "hardnesses". The computer age has eliminated the need to do that or know that anymore to make drawings -- hell, paper, silk, velum, plastic and all the other stuff on which drawings were made has been made not quite completely obsolete.
