Captured
Clare Sullivan, a beautiful slave travels by ship often with her mistress. Clare dresses like a fine lady and can read and write. This is her owners' attempt to fool people they meet on their voyages since slavery is frowned upon in some of the countries they visit. On one trip their ship is hijacked by pirates. During a violent struggle, Dominic LeVeq, a dashing pirate takes the gold, guns, and kidnaps Clare. Clare resists capture and curses Dominic in four different languages. Dominic takes Clare to an island he inhabits located near Cuba. It was on the island that Clare enjoys sunsets, waterfalls, and freedom. She is surrounded by people of diverse backgrounds living together peacefully. Clare steals Dominic's heart and she feels passion for the first time . Although this story shows many of the indignities of slavery, the main focus is the love story and Dominic's daring rescue of Clare's enslaved children left behind in Savannah. The love scenes are hot, hot, hot.

Such an amazing escape
A sweeping romance high sea adventures, paradise, a strong sassy heroine and a great story. I was enthralled it is a great escape story to read to get away from everything. The Spector of capture hangs over their heads at all time the main characters are never truly safe so that tension is always there in the background. Their love builds in a realistic way. She is not immediately falling into his arms and swooning over him. He is a man on a mission. Stealing from others to take care of the people who have put their trust in him. I love that it is inspired by a real pirate ship. I use love a lot in reviews I just really loved this story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

a must read for historians and those who want to learn the other side of the African experience in America!
I loved this book! The romance, the hints of erotica, the historical information that has my head spinning and has me itching to go do research, and the other view of the experience of chattel slavery in the Americas and how we fought to be human is astounding. Reading this was like working a Rubics Cube. I think of myself as being well versed in our history, but this book has opened up avenues of our being as we transversed the experience of chattel slavery in the Americas! I loved that the characters referred to themselves as African, not Black, which is merely a color, but by being consistent the reader is made to keep a connection to Africa and realize they were reading the story of someone who had been KIDNAPPED from their home and struggled to so survive. I am sending his book to Oprah and other directors and producers.mIT WOULD MAKE A WONDERFUL MOVIE SERIES!!!

A Very Pleasant Surprise!
I've been burned out from romance novels for a while now because something seemed lacking to me (definitely not the sex, that was abundant in spades). I't was also disappointing as a fan of historical fiction, that I couldn't seem to find any with characters I could relate to. It's a shame I hadn't stumbled upon Beverly Jenkins' work earlier. To be able to enjoy a well-written and researched historical plot involving rich characters and detailed descriptions of the beauty of the caribbean islands was a treat. The eroticism was still there, but in a tasteful way that did not overpower the entire story or use really awkward or even crude descriptive words. I fell in love with the handsome and fearless Dominic, the beautiful and intelligent Clare, Gaspar, Esteban, Anna, Sarah, Ben and the others because...that's exactly what I'm supposed to do when I'm reading a great book: fall in love with the characters!

This Story Captured Me Tool!
First of all this is a romance novel set during the Revolutionary War Era. It's rare to find a romance written from a black perspective during that time, and this one was superb. The lives of the characters intertwined in the most excellent of ways as they traveled the globe during this turbulent time in search of riches to sustain the way of life for a refugee society in the Caribbean. The hero of this story was a strong, possessive hunk of a man (based on the life of a true person) who I couldn't get enough of. This story was simply great, there were so many unexpected twists and turns that it kept me on the edge of my seat. Definitely, get this book. You won't regret it.

Another winner
Ms Jenkins cannot seem to write a bad story! This one, like all of her others, draw you in so thoroughly to where you should be sleeping but just one more chapter...This one, with Dominic and Claire was particularly good. It's interesting to read the viewpoint of an enslaved person who gets a taste of freedom and the man responsible for it and how the navigate around themselves and their pasts. Ms Jenkins educates as well as entertains. Read this book. You won't regret it.
