Greatest hits from a great band.
Ash don't reinvent the wheel musically but this greatest hits album makes you realise how many great songs they've got. Lead songwriter Tim Wheeler really knows how to write a great hook and for me they're the greatest power pop/punk pop band of the 90s. I just wish more people had heard of them.

Another hits collection, but there is always something indispensable added...
This triple disc collection is a must for hardcore Ashheads...and for the casual fan or newbie, the double is a nice intro...this is the 3rd collection of this sort (4th if you count the triple "1977" reissue)...following "Intergalactic Sonic 7"s/Cosmic Debris" & CD/DVD "Very Best Of Ash"...this thing has an up-to-date singles collection on 2 discs and a rarities disc which is like "Cosmic Debris" part 2...also a new song & cool lenticular 3D cover that changes from Ash in the beginning to Ash in the present day...pretty neat... another thing about this set is it shows both how consistent Tim has been as a songwriter of ace powerpop tunes and how great Ash has been as a band through the years...also how nicely they have evolved...the fact that their last album, 2018's "Islands" is among their best yet & rivals their most famous work, 25 years on, IS pretty remarkable...for ANY band, not just Ash, and that says a lot...even 2 of the best selling & popular bands ever...the Beatles & ABBA...even the Ramones, Clash & Sex Pistols can't say that...but Ash can!!

Celebrating a quarter of a century!
To celebrate a quarter of a century, cult rockers Ash have dropped a definitive greatest hits collection. Although there is also a vinyl and a triple CD version (with a disc containing 18 rarities.. I do plan to get that soon) for the hardcore collector, my copy is the standard two CD set. These three men are more than qualified to fill a decent double album loaded with hits. In total, there are 13 top 40 hits here, although the band have actually had 18. Despite the fact there have been compilations before, Ash have continued to release critically acclaimed albums that have hit the charts, most recently 2018's 'Islands' which peaked at no.18, so there was more stuff to be included, and this explains the omission of a few chart tracks. The songs are not presented chronologically, but in a order which flows very well. There's the earliest stuff from their pop-punk days that helped define the Nineties indie era such as 'Girl From Mars', 'Oh Yeah', 'Angel Interceptor' and film track 'A Life Less Ordinary', songs that can transport you straight back to that time and make you think of Summer, to the much more recent gems like 'Cocoon', 'Annabel, and 'Buzzkill', proving Ash haven't lost their initial sound, but are still contemporary. My favourite studio album, 2001's 'Free All Angels' is well represented with four of the six hits it spawned, 'Shining Light', 'Burn Baby Burn', 'Sometimes', and 'Walking Barefoot', back in the day when singles actually meant and did something. It annoys me that so many great singles are being released all the time, but it's harder for them to climb up the charts with so much downloading and streaming (call me all fashioned) going on. Still, whilst the established indie artists sometimes struggle to make their new song heard, their albums continue to sell. I have to say that I was disappointed by the omission of 'There's a Star', that's always been one of my personal favourites, and deserves it's place on here. That aside, this is an excellent overview of the band so far, it really hits home just how large their back catalogue is, and there are highlights from across all their studio albums, giving the newbie fan a great opportunity to gain a full overview of what they've been missing. For those of us who already have them but need this new one because it's Ash and we love them, there is a brand new song to help justify buying these songs again, 'Darkest Hour' which has that irresistible trademark melody. 'Teenage Wildlife - 25 Years of Ash' has already made an impact in the charts, debuting at no.26 on the first week of it's release. Here's to the next 25!
