I bought this book wanting a new view on the Hansa, In fact the text is lifted directly from a book, 'The Story of the Nations, Hansa Towns' which was published by T. Fisher Unwin, (I have a third edition) The earlier version also has illustrations and an index which is not included in this book. The text was written by Helen Zimmern in 1889, she writes that she is 'bringing to the public.... the first History of the Hanseatic League' This is reproduced in full in the later publication but with no explanation of why is has been copied so much later and been given a different title. Although the text is interesting, much of it is out of date, following the destruction wrought by two world wars, the DDR and even by later town planners. Anyone wanting a comprehensive history on the Hansa should look elsewhere.

The wealth of the Northern Seas.
A very good book. Just a bit outdated but still amazing and rich of informations about the wonderful Hanseatic League.

The forgotten Baltic
Extremely well written Helen tells with grace and elegance a terrible history of power, competition and maturation of commerce institutions in the Baltic that played a role as important as the Mediterranean in the development of international trade and institutions.

a sad omission for a topic with such beautiful cities
What a peculiar history book - neither table of contents nor index. And no illustrations, a sad omission for a topic with such beautiful cities. And finally - NO MAPS! These seems essential. If you must have this book, buy used (1.e., cheap) edition.
