o longer have the time.
A plunge into pre-war, existentialist Paris. The characters are not likeable. Simone de Beauvoir wrote it as a way to break free from what she saw as her as her inauthenticity in her relationship with Sartre until then. She said that after worrying this novel, she found her independence and never stopped writing, even as her relationship with Sartre continued for their whilst lives. It is a journey into not only a different time and place, but also a different kind of self- conscience and self-scrutinity, for which we no longer have time.

simone beauvoir is rememebered mostly for her opus THE SECOND SEX but her fiction is engrossing and captivating.a knowledge of her life reveals many autobiographical details in her novels.her writing is the apex of french mid 20thcentury fiction.

Book gets better every time I read it
I bought this book to replace one I had lent a friend and never got back. It seems to happen to so many of my books. I am rebuilding my De Beauvoir library and there isn't one of her books that isn't worth having. This one particularly poignant because it chronicles a romantic rift in her legendary relationship with Sartre. Splendid.
