A lot of thought provoking tec
There are many weapons including AI that are all very possible in the very near future. They may even be in testing or use. A very thought provoking read. It gave me the feeling that in future wars not so many " boots on the ground" would be needed so the casualties as far as manpower would much less in war.

The Chinese as Enemy
I rather hate seeing China projected as the next "great enemy" of western civilization. Naturally, that is what this thriller does. The story line is interesting, if a little fanciful. The action scenes though are well done. I could easily see this book modified into a film script in the not distant future. Holden writes well enough and the book is a fun, if bloody, read. Enjoy.

Good Book
Very good book. Lots of unexpected entanglements and political intrigue. Good look at new technological advances and others to come in the future.

Really terrific read if you like military science fiction
Terrific read, if a little short. The plot was a bit, but not too far fetched and I liked the near term extensions of war tech and how the opposing sides were using the tech. The characters were real and there were enough twists in the character plots to keep things interesting. I'm reading the third book in the series, but a bit into this book (I read the first in the series first), the second in this series, I realized these could be read out of sequence and still get a lot of enjoyment out of these books. If you're a fan of near future military science fiction, you should check out these books.

Great reliving time on Okinawa
The setting for this novel is the island of Okinawa, which I spent a year on while on active duty in the US Navy. Even though set in the future, just hearing the names of the places we frequented while in island brought back pleasant memories of our time there. Also intriguing is the interplay of the superpowers that have had an influence on life in East Asia, specifically the US, China and Japan. This book delves into what may happen if the delicate balance of power were to shift in a different direction.

Good read
Good paced writing

It didn't last long enough for the price.
Although I was warned in the Overview that it would not take rough treatment, the wings and motor fell off each time it gained flight, even before landing. We could put it back together again but replacing parts each time got tedious.

Best Near-Future War Series Ever Written
I am a 70+ year old retired Navy officer and medical professional; I also am an amateur military historian who keeps up with all publicly-available news on new and developing weapon systems. During my 20 years in the Navy, I served onboard two warships, including an aircraft carrier, and two nuclear “fast attack” submarines. I’ve ridden back seat for two catapult-launches and two “tail hook” landings, as well as several Navy helicopters.I summarized my background as support for my review of FX Holden’s incredible series ”This is the Future of War”. The lead character is an Aussie jets, helicopter & drone pilot with more good luck than most, but in each book of the series the author introduces one or more supporting characters, each just as fascinating as the lead character, and more often than not are the ones who bring each novel to its conclusion. The battles and skirmishes are fast-paced, the newest types of deadly weapons are, well, very deadly. Battles and even brief skirmishes are messy, unpredictable, and very bloody affairs, something the author realistically portrays. Each story comes, as might be anticipated in any novel, to a positive end… but in the five books I’ve read thus far, I could not have predicted the outcome even 2/3 through the story. The author has taken his place on top of the pedestal where only the very best of military novel authors may stand one day. This series of books is a must-read for anyone who enjoys this style of fiction, or those who studiously follow the development of weapons of war and battlefield tactics. Kudos, FX Holden!

Frightening Sleeper
This novel is a sneaky but really frightening sleeper which progresses from a seeming normal spy story into a devastating, almost nuclear, battle. The two main nations involved could certainly be combined as in the novel and the characters are superbly described. This could be a forewarning to present nations as to the dangers of what could actually be developed in the near future. A great read in my books!

This is what military fiction should be
Gripping combat in the air, on the ground & at sea. Authentic & detailed, just what makes for a compelling techno- thriller. Loved the way the characters have been fleshed out in the story. I think I'm in love with Bunny!

Original entertaining and a very good read - difficult to put down
Fx Holden real name Tim Slee ( a very talented Australian author) was unknown to me until a couple of months ago. I have now read two of his books and they are truly outstanding.I pay very little attention to the Amazon marketing diatribe, which can at times be at severe odds with my own, and also a lot of other peoples opinion - appreciate that they are trying to sell their books, but some of their comments are laughable. In the case of FX Holden everything they say about him is TRUE. He has a strong cast of characters who also appear in his other books, who are dynamic and totally believable. His stories are set in the near future 20 - 30 years or so, and not what you would term as science fiction. His stories are very cleverly written and really are spellbinding. I have sat up half the night being unable to put hid dammed books down.So what’s this book about- clever Chinese rogues manipulating the now potent Japanese war machine as a proxy fighting force who are starting to get the better of the USA the British and the Aussies to name just a few. It involves supersonic fighter duels, laser armed space vehicles, potent missile armed surface ships and much more. I am not going to spoil your enjoyment by disclosing any more.Read the book now, once you have read it you will be looking to buy the next in the series - you have been warned.
