Great Macro flash
I use this for dentistry with a 105mm macro 1:1 lens and it works great. I used to be a professional photographer but always used a studio ring flash for macro photography. Decided upon this flash when I needed a lens mounted ring flash. This flash is very bright for macro photography and very quick and easy to control. Color screen is a great feature and it makes adjustments quick and easy. Screen has a gyroscope that automatically rotates when the camera rotates to make reading it easier. Comes in a nice faux leather foam padded box with snap buttons. Flash comes with multiple sizes of lens adapters. Easily clips on and off lens just by pinching two buttons on either side of the flash. You can also push a button to make the flash pop out to the sides making the flash spread wider. It's not powerful enough to expose correctly at any great distance (>4ft or so), but it is a macro flash. I typically shoot at f22 iso400 with shutter speed of 1/125th and distance of ~6-12 inches from subject. In my situation I need everything in focus and properly exposed and these settings give me good results with my lens.

Macro Heaven
I love macro photography, especially flowers. Bought this flash to use with a 100mm Tokina macro lens. Already have the Nissin Di866 speedlight and really like it. With this macro ring flash you get nice dark backgrounds in bright sunlight (shoot at f32) and great depth of field. Not so hot for portraits as you get the ring flash shape as a catch light in the subjects eyes. But, for macro, it's been really nice.

Love this light
What can I say, for macro work its awesome. At first I ordered the Nikon version which won't work with Canon (or at least not with ttl). I was a little confused about which camera system the listed item was for but once I got the correct one all the features worked perfect. The carry box is awesome, very nice product.

Worth Every Penny
I looked around at many ring flashes for macro. There were not a whole lot of reviews for this product. Nissin products have good quality associated with what they produce. I figured that they know what they are doing when it comes to photography and optics. I am very happy with this flash. I use it for all occasions, just not macro. But as far as the macro settings are concerned, they are top notch. This flash is very well engineered. The command at the macro level is outstanding. 1/6 steps of control. I have done a lot of testing and what they claim is true to form. 1/6 of a step is is a very small increment and their product delivers it. Their are about 20 steps at the macro level. You have at your command a super tight command of light for any situation. My setup is a Canon 20D and this flash works perfectly with it. I have tried out a lot of functions that the flash has to offer and I can't find anything to complain about. They have delivered a quality product. I wish I could insert a composite image to show how well this flash does it's job. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] for a pdf showing the flash at work. Just title it FLASH COMPOSITE so I don't miss it. I will give you a detailed account. I really like this product. Buy one. You won't be disappointed. This flash is for those who know what they want. Just so you know I am not affiliated with Nissin in any way. But I will go out of my way to support a good product. I read reviews closely. I buy a lot of my stuff based on others who can can deliver an unbiased opinion through personal field testing.

Great product
Splurge, but worth it for macro photos.

Great for dental photography and macro work requiring consistent colour accuracy
Bought for dental photography. Having being highly recommend by experts in dental photography I decided to take the plunge. It is an awesome product, which help to ensure colour accuracy between shots, which is very important in dental photography. Improved my clinical photography game immensely. My only complaint is that it adds a lot of bulk to the camera, but this is expected with most quality flash modules. Also with he flash on, there's no option to place lens cover on the camera. I like to leave the camera setup to take pictures on the spur of my patients, but without a lens cover I'm always scared of scratching the lens when the camera is not in use. Ift hey could incorporate that into their design in the future, the product ould be perfect. But otherwise great for what I need it for, and worth the investment.

Excellent piece of kit
Excellent piece of kit. Quality build and performs beautifully. Comes in a really nice case, which stores both the flashgun and adaptor - as well as the adaptor rings. Fits the Nikon 7200 camera I have really well. The two reasons it lost a star, is the lack of any instruction leaflet/booklet. There is a "quick start" guide which shows how to use the basics, but you need a third party book (or on-line videos?) to get the best from the kit. I know many maunfacturers now rely on the user to get help, but (for the money) I would have expected a little more guidance. The second reason it lost a star is that it does 'vignette' at wider angles. There is a feature on the flash where you can expand the flash rings out of the way, but it only goes so far. Overall though I would recommend this kit to any body. Paired with my Sigma 105mm Macro lens it gives excellent results.

this comes in a very nice presentation box which stores the flash and the filter ...
As others have noted, this comes in a very nice presentation box which stores the flash and the filter adapters. I can't imagine that the Canon version could be better built than this nor can I imagine that it is more effective. There really isn't any need for more than the simple set-up guide unless you are using as a wireless master in which case you may have to delve into the full instructions available on line.I imagine most will use it on TTL mode where you can dial in exposure compensation and also adjust the ratio between the left and right hand flash tubes. That is what I did and the results were perfect - correct exposure every time and a nice even light across the subject.I've used off camera flash, table lights and a video light to illuminate macro subjects. Using a ring flash is a lot easier to set-up and the results are much better.

I might as well have used a candle
I was very disappointed with this product. Reading professional and customer reviews this seemed like the perfect flash for my macro photography but I have found its Nikon iTTL support to be very unreliable and its support for fast shutter speeds > 1/250s to be poor. In some use cases I'd have gotten more illumination from a candle! Even operating it entirely manually, I found it unreliable. I actually got better results from my home made paper card diffuser sellotaped to my sb400 speedlight!!! I am in the process of sending it back to Amazon. As my negative opinion is in the minority, perhaps I received a bad example? I might try again and see if I have better luck next time.

A good quality flash.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of build of the MF18. It's much bigger and heavier than I expected, but certainly useable for me. It's easy to use and control the light output, which can b variable on either side. The flash does have a port to update the firmware, however it does not come with a USB lead, and the instructions advise to use the one that came with your camera, one reason I gave it four stars instead of five. The other is that there is no way to adjust the angle of direction of the flash, so depending on your exposure you can get shadows. Overall it well worth buying.
