History, not encapsulated but extrapolated. The struggles and triumphs of life in early Texas.
The author, my Aunt Katy, didn't just write a book on the history of a family immigrating to Texas. That would be too easy. She slows down time from months, days and years to the individual environments for a family migrating to Texas. While dates and times would be enough for a history book, this is a book on experiences... and not just random supposition but likely scenarios based on what is known as it compares to and contrasts with the overall Texas evolution. The conditions on the ships, the early days of the Texas coast and what is known of the political, economic and even social aspects of early settler life are to be gained from within the pages of this book. This is how history is best understood and this is how history serves us best.If you are looking for a simple chronology, this book will serve you well past that with the lessons and experiences of how mankind makes its way through history.Texas is not simply the sum of its battles toward independence but the tenacity of the many different people from the many places of origin around the world. The lessons of each race, religion and geographic background, as they endured hardships to provide for their families, a better life, are captured here, if even just through the eyes of one person. Herein lies what history fail to offer: the ability to help one to remember that mankind strives to find and live a better life and the challenges faced were and are a price worth paying.
