With Earth in disrepair and no longer inhabitable, the human race begins to leave the planet for a new home on Mars. One of the departing vessels, the ship Ankara, runs through a field of space wreckage shortly after takeoff and is damaged beyond repair. With Ankara knocked off-course and drifting powerlessly out of control, the crew and passengers alike must wrestle with the reality of their fate. Crew member MR (Emelia Jonson) operates a sentient computer that allows humans to experience idyllic memories of their lives on Earth. As the ship drifts further into space, the passengers begin to lose hope and sanity amid the growing sense of disaster. Pressure builds on MR as she is the only one who can keep the burgeoning insanity and lethal depression at bay.

Thoroughly enjoyed it
I thoroughly enjoyed Aniara, even though it is a depressing movie. The characters were well developed and I connected with the main character as she progressed through her journey. It's rare that a sci-fi movie set in space can transcend its modest budget, but I was too engrossed in the story to care about second-tier CGI. I never once found myself thinking it needed more CGI or more elaborate sets to be enjoyable. The storyline is simple enough. As people come to realize that their journey won't go as planned they cope with that realization in different ways. I personally think it's a pretty accurate view of human nature when things don't go as planned. Emotions range from anger, acceptance, and despair, to truly insane.Don't think of this as a sci-fi adventure. This is a study in humanity facing severe adversity, that just happens to be set in space. It's not a perfect movie. The second half felt a bit rushed and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the director cut 30 minutes from the overall length. I also would have liked to learn a little more about Mima, but we do at least learn enough to understand why it's so important. Some may find the pacing a bit slow, but it was perfectly fine for me. I recommend watching this when you're in an introspective mood. Don't expect a space adventure and you'll be pleasantly rewarded.

A different sci-fi movie
I a world of Omnipotent Mary Sues, this movie is different, In space bad things can happen, and stuck adrift humans go nuts. I found this movie quite real, nice to have a break from the preachy 'woke' diatribe from hollywood.

Though the film is not a favorite for everyone, for me it works and the transfer is excellent
The story of Aniara is based on an opera by Harry Martinson, a Swede, from 1956. I listened to a recording back in 1963. The film may well seem too slow for contemporary tastes, but, to me, it is penetrating and enjoyable. It also has a singularly ironic and sad ending. The transfer is flawless. The "Goldonda Aniara," a space transport on a routine flight to Mars with refugees from a devastated Earth, encounters damage from space debris and is rendered unmaneuverable, knocked off course and headed into interstellar space. To me a haunting movie.

not sure i get swedish scifi
This is a really odd scifi movie that requires A LOT of energy to not think too much because if you do you will be driven nuts by the hopelessly illogical actions of the characters.... That said, I was able to sit through the entire movie and was entertained by it most because it was fun reading the captions and trying to understand what was going on. While the story has a lot of holes that you could drive a bus through seeing the adventures through space and time and wondering how one's self would react if they were onboard the Anira made it entertaining for me.

Interesting and relevant
I think that the story is relevant to today’s European and American cultures. This is a cerebral movie so you might want to be in that mood before watching it. I have studied psychology and the producers do a good job of summarizing the things we could be familiar with in our modern times. Overall, It was worth the rental fee.

All that matters is who we are.
Really liked this movie because of the relationships and how being stranded on wayward vessel has an effect on everyone.Technically I’m not sure that there’s much accuracy. Why can the crew detect a space probe that’s 14 months away, but not space debris that’s a couple of hours away? Also the brutality and dishonesty of the captain is reminiscent of times past, not what most people expect for the future. The best part of the ending is the arrival at the closest star system, it’s kind of like an analogy of materialism. What’s the point of having material things that last forever if nobody will be around to know?

Great SF movie (top 5 of the many I watched)
Technically, it is "hard SF", where almost all the futuristic aspects are technologically credible and do not violate physics - minimal suspension of disbelief, if you are technology- or science-oriented, not FTL and "magics". But it is the story which makes this movie great, and the fantastic low-key Scandinavian acting, deeply human and restrained. The ending is haunting, but absolutely brilliant.

Great flick. Not your average "space battle" Sci-Fi.
I loved this one. It's really hard to review the nuances, but there's just something about the way the whole scene is set and the story unfolds that's captivating. Basically, it's a huge luxury shuttle to Mars that gets derailed and floats through space endlessly, unable to turn around or go home. The characters are the core of the movie, but you never get the feeling it's drifted from Sci-Fi. Most of the flick is set in the first 1 to 50 years, but it goes further than that. No spoilers . . . just a strong recommendation. BTW--the Blu-Ray looks great too!
