The Astronaut's Wife [Blu-ray]

This film has some interesting Alien chorus lines running through it!
Not perfect, but well worth a viewing. The most interesting part for me was how he and his fellow astronaut were taken over by alien parasite and became mere vehicles of its bidding. The radios were an interesting classic communicator with a practical nostalgic touch in vintage design of the period. What made this a four star for me rather than a five was that sometimes the film got off point and then recaptured itself in ways that were not always graceful as could have been in measuring up with the strong points of the film. Still worth a watch and some great acting as expected in a top tier cast.

Good Johnny Depp film
The movie has a lot of twists and turns.Johnny Depp does a great job portrayinghis part. It’s a sci-fi / thriller with an unusualending. However, it has a scene that is sultry,so caution with children watching. It’s an enjoyable movie.

It is a good movie
So this was a movie that passed me by a long time ago. But, having recently watched "The Thing" in theaters, it made me think of this one. So I sat down and gave it try, even though some of the reviews had me seriously wondering if the film was going to be bad.So, after watching I must say...to heck with the negative reviews! It was a good movie. A blend of science fiction and thriller. The concept of how the alien force enters the astronauts' bodies is intriguing. There aren't a lot of dazzling special effects that show you how this all occurs though (just a little bit of special effects), and you won't be seeing any gruesome aliens with writhing tentacles emerging from a mother ship.Nope, just an interesting story combined with great acting, which equates to a good movie. If you like stories involving aliens, and don't need a lot special effects, you'll enjoy this one.As for the story being like Rosemary's Baby, which some other reviewers have mentioned, I can't speak to that (never seen Rosemary's Baby). But really...who cares? There are cyclic patterns in the Universe, so it is the same with movies and stories. Big deal.

Interesting movie, different... but good.
I just like this movie because Johnny Depp is in it he's my favorite actor from 21 Jump Street (The Show) to A Nightmare On Elm Street. I don't know why he had to have a fake southern accent but I guess to bring out the character he was playing. Johnny usually plays weird roles anyway except for maybe The nightmare on elm street he was just a regular teen in that movie. But this was a good movie to me that's why I decided to buy it but there were some parts that I couldn't quite put my finger on or made sense I still never understood about the static sounds coming from the radio or how really did the alien/ strange lifeform get into Spencer. They left some details out. But I will give this movie 5 stars Johnny did a great acting job, he's very handsome in this movie too. And this movie does have suspense and drama to it.

Wow! This was bad.
Despite the great actors involved, this movie moves so slow and is very poorly written. I'm all for films paced slowly but this snoozer was just very poorly executed. Ultimately it's down to the writing and direction, both of which are bad. Clunky direction. Beautiful to look at though.

This is a very interesting movie to say the least. My boyfriends mom recommended for us to watch it because it is very different than most alien movies. It’s definitely a good movie and it was interesting seeing Johnny Depp in a role like this.

Impressive
This movie is a class thriller. You can't look away! I had a dream some years ago very similar to the plot of this movie, but I have never seen this movie until now. What if an astronaut brought something back with him from outer space? If his wife becomes pregnant, is she carrying her husband's child or the child of this alien being? It preys on the underlying fears of humanity of being systematically wiped out.But this movie is NOT about the spread of an alien virus around the globe. It's a psychological thriller on a smaller scale, between a husband and a wife. The scenes are passionate and riveting. The wife begins to suspect that something is wrong after one of her husband's colleagues dies (presumably of natural causes.) The colleague's wife then presumably commits suicide. The wife, who has just learned she is pregnant, starts to wonder what happened to her husband up in space during his lost two minutes of communication with NASA. She is approached by a former employee of NASA who says he has answers for her, so she reluctantly agrees to meet him. She follows the information he gives her, which leads her to the truth. She begins having mental visions of her babies and of what her husband is doing in the present. There is a fantastic twist ending that I did not see coming. This is NOT a movie for those interested in blood and gore. It's along the lines of Rosemary's Baby or maybe the Pelican Brief if you want some comparisons. I'm thoroughly impressed, and wonder how I could have missed this gem when it was out in theatres.

Take « Rosemary’s Baby », add scenes from « Omen », replace Satan with aliens, dull it down and you will get this failed film
I was very disappointed by this annoying and boring 1999 SF film. Buying it was a waste of money and watching it was a waste of time. Below, more of my impressions, with some LIMITED SPOILERS.While on a space-walking mission, American astronauts Spencer Armacost (Johny Depp) and Alex Streck (Nick Cassavetes) meet trouble. They manage to re-establish contact with flight control after a two minute interruption, but having been both injured, they have to make an emergency landing. They manage to land safely, are hospitalized and seem to recover rather well, but their wives start to feel uncomfortable around them - it seems indeed that they have both changed… All this takes especially a toll on Armacost's wife Jillian (Charlize Theron). And then the film really begins. There are so many things wrong with this film that it is even hard to decide where to begin. For me I think the worst thing is the total lack of originality. After a beginning which seems to be taken strait from an "Outer Limits" (great series by the way) episode, the film very quickly becomes a very, very weak remake of "Rosemary's Baby" (an infinitely better film), with some elements which are a carbon copy of their equivalents from "Omen" (a film even more infinitely better). The lack of originality is such, that even Charlize Theron haircut is a copy of one Mia Farrow used in the "Rosemary's Baby" (and, to be fair, in many of her other films). Other than that it must be also said, that the pace of the film is very slow, not so much happens, dialogs are weak, suspense is AWOL and the ending is as lame as &£+*%!I must go a little bit further about the dialogs – there is at least one moment when I actually burst out in embarrassed laughter, because the lines were so ridiculously awful. LITTLE SPOILER HERE. Even worse, they were supposed to be said at a somehow kinky moment, when Charlize Theron was being ravished slightly against her will – but still wrapped her (amazing) legs around her assailant… This one and only one steamy scene was however MURDERED by the words said at that moment. OK, I stop the SPOILERS here. This film wasted completely the talent of Johny Depp, who mostly was asked to not show any emotion of any kind and play it "android style". Charlize Theron was still at the beginning of her career at that time (she was barely 24) and she was still learning her trade, but she valiantly tried to face the horrible scenario and I grant it to her, she did everything she could. But when the cause is lost from the beginning, even the most gallant efforts are in vain. Interestingly also, even if in this film she is a very attractive young damsel, she clearly blossomed in her full beauty only years later - clearly Charlize Theron is one of those girls who look better at 35 than at 20...There is not so much to be said about the secondary characters, except for Jillian's sister Nan, played by Clea Du Vall, who is always a pleasure to watch, with her unconventional but fascinating kind of beauty. Also, one of the few good things to be said about this film, is that the producers asked veteran actress Samantha Eggar to make a cameo and therefore allowed her to cash a pay check, which she probably needed…Bottom line, this is a bad film, which very, very deservedly bombed horribly at box office. Two stars only for Charlize Theron (and her legs). I gave away the DVD immediately after watching it – and the sensible thing would have been to do it BEFORE watching…

I enjoyed the
Helped while away a few hours while I was ironing. I have been after this for a while as I had seen a bit before and wanted to see the whole film. I don't remember the original ending but I thought this alternative one was appropriate. I enjoyed the film
