Sleek, smart, elegant--a masterpiece...
I suspect this splendid volume will soon be found in the libraries of art directors, architects, and city planners everywhere. I'm a layman, but I was captivated by the images in "Signs, Streets, and Storefronts"--and then found myself poring over the clear, rich prose. Handsome and elegant, the book is sophisticated and clearly painstakingly researched. I couldn't help but feel waves of nostalgia as I was drawn into the crisp photos and illustrations of street scenes from bygone days. Yet the presentation very skillfully--almost magically--evoked a sense of modern relevance. I wasn't looking for insights on how aspects of American society have evolved, but between the wonderful images and compelling text, I learned more about our culture than I expected. So, while I predict Mr. Treu's impressive compilation will become required reading for a wide range of college courses, from architecture and graphic design to urban history and sociology, it is so much more than a text book. I'll enjoy flipping through the pages for the sheer delight of it, and for many years to come.

Great Resource for Main Street
Excellent history of Main Street economic and design considerations. Well researched and documented. As a community consultant, I've recommended it to anyone involved in community appearance or design review. It helps put new issues like LED technology in a historical/business perspective.JRH, Municipal Design Review Network

Essential Design History Reference Book
This is a comprehensive and fascinating book. It is packed full of examples and focuses on the typography, design, and architecture of legacy signage and storefronts from coast-to-coast. So many of these beautiful signs fell from favor, were removed, and might have been forgotten—until this book. Thank you for creating this important documentation and manifesto for the visual vitality of America's commercial corridors.

AMERICA'S MAIN STREETS MATTER
The modest cover of Mr. Treu's book pales in contrast to the rich content found inside. This book has given the reader a new understanding and appreciation for the cultural value and positive influence of our small towns, as well as nostalgic delight in rediscovering many of the vintage signs and buildings Mr. Treu has captured in his extensive research and travels. This book also effectively sounds the alarm at the rapid pace our society is "clearing away" these fast disappearing structures and symbols of Americana. "Signs,Streets, and Storefronts" is a fascinating schooling in a subject (Architecture and Graphics) the reader had never explored before.
