A serious reel for the serious Angler!!
As a spincast afficinado and advid fisherman I must say after trying almost every top spincast reel including top vintage ones such as the legendary johnson sabra 130b as well as goldcasts , zebco omegas, zebco 33s, zebco 888, abu garcia 170i etc....which I own most of them I must say for the money the silvervcast by far goes beyond expectations. I own the 170 and I am very happy with it , I have it on a cabelas 7 ft mh tourney rod and it is my big lure rod as I have thrown number 5 mepps, 7 inch flukes, 3/4 ounce jig and craw ,frogs etc.....I have pitched in heavy matted lilly pads , weeds, etc and have pulled out large northern and a couple 4lb bass and this reel has handles it all,I have used 20lb cabelas loncast braid which has a 10 lb mono diameter and it has been great in this reel. If you are going to use mono I suggest 12 or 14 lb iron silk, with braid stick with smooth coated lines such as cabelas longcast, tuff line supercast , power pro superslick etc. to minimize friction and you will have a great set up.This is an exceptionally fast reel at 29 inch per crank ....maybe the fastest spincast reel and can match most baitcasters ,the drag is one of the best I have seen considering this can be a problem with most spincast reels.....I would like diawa to consider future models to have a star drag instead but this one for a top drag system is very smooth and has not slipped on me once whcihi is something I cannot not say about my goldcasts and zebco omegas. This is diawas best spincast reel and is far better than the goldcast and is cheaper(go figure). As far as comparisons to zebco ...well as a former zebco fan this reel smokes their most expensive spincast reel the omega which is almost double the price. Now I fish very seriously and average about 200 fish a year ...now considering I am primarily a bank angler that is a decent amount and I throw only lures and this reel has been one of the best reels I own .Dont let anyone tell you that a spincast reel is not for serious fisherman as they do not know what they talking about. This is one serious reel and in my opinion one of the best spincast reel ever made!!!Buy one ...you will not be dissapointed!!

The Fastest Fishing Reel That I have Ever Owned In My Life.
My background- 10 Fish Ohio Awards and I don't go fishing to drink a six-pack and waste an entire day with only 2 fish in the boat. I have only used this reel once, but this reel has got to be one of the fastest reels on the market. It has an opening that is about 4 times as large as my other reels, 3 ball bearing and a retrieve line per crank of 21.8 inches. The first time I used it, I was able to retrieve the fish and get them in the boat extremely fast. I caught more than 30 fish. This reel is a little heavier than I would like, considering that I cast about 300 times in an average day of fishing, but I still like this reel. I will probably write an update in the future, but my initial impression is that this a well-crafted quick retrieve reel.Update 09-27-13: I have used the reel 3 times now and it is my favorite reel. Quick, smooth and easy returns and casting.

Well-built, solid spincast reel.
I have 2 of these reels and they work perfectly. The quality of the product and the attention to detail on a reel in this price range is impressive. What really drew me to the Silvercast series is the retrieve ratio. Most spincast reels have a very slow retrieve and if you are casting long distances or fishing in an area with a lot of obstructions on the bottom this can really be an issue. This 170 series reel pulls in 29 inches of line with every crank of the handle (IPT)! Considering my Abu Garcia 6500 C3 is rated at 25 IPT, this is an extremely fast retrieve and amazing for a spincaster. Now, just to be clear, with that fast of a retrieve you do give up some cranking power and you will notice that right away if you are throwing heavier weights, like 1 oz or above. But, the drag works perfect on even large catfish and the reel is smooth and rock solid. Highly recommend if you need a reel that is foolproof to use and fish for larger freshwater species.Review Update, December 2012:After a few months of use I wanted to update and clarify my review of this reel. This is a very well-built, solid MEDIUM action class reel. 12-14 lb test line works great and the casting, retrieve and drag functions on the reel are good. If you are looking for a spincast reel to throw weights less than 1 ounce and/or to fish for 10 lb and under fish, this is a great choice. As to heavier applications, throwing larger weights, this reel is not the one. The high-speed gear ratio is great for lighter weights, but for anything over 1 oz the reel strains on the retrieve. I originally bought this to pair up with a medium/heavy 7-foot casting rod to fish for catfish from the bank. At lighter lines and weights it works good for that. But, it is limited to those applications. Throwing a 2-ounce weight in any kind of current and the reel feels like you are trying to retrieve a log.So, good reel for lighter applications. Not the best choice for what I wanted to do - can't really blame the reel for that! For a true HD spincast reel, check out a Zebco 888 ProStaff.
