Looking in the Mirror with Dean Rader
Dean Rader once remarked, “identity can refer to both individual and national notions of self.” But with Self-Portrait as Wikipedia Entry he manages to expand the parameters of identity in dimensions that surprise, delight, challenge and provoke. One of my favorite poems in the book is “Cartography: or American Allegory I” written in the form of a ghazal. Rader evokes a gamut of emotions while riffing on his native state of Oklahoma. The appealing illustrations on the book cover relate to the poems so it is a fun exercise to match them up. I still have a couple to identify.
