What I expect from a complete ready to run trainset. If you’re looking for an off the shelf Hogwarts Express, this is it. Will keep most people entertained for hours.Did NOT come with the “playmat” in the image. Engine seems of good quality. Runs well on my 18” radius layout. Cars are plastic, but have a good amount of detail on both the interior and exterior. Couplers will NOT interface with “standard” horn hook or knuckle couplers. They are a European NEM style. So a Kaydee NEM knuckle adapter would be needed if you wanted to use it with your existing stock. Controller is lightweight and lacks the heft of cabs from yesteryear, however it does the job.

This is a nice set with all you need to set it up and run it in a small oval. The engine works fine, though there is a hum from the motor as it starts, likely due to not quite enough electricity at the lowest settings of the power control. The hum goes away once the motor gets enough juice to start turning and the train moves.Cars are detailed pretty nicely, though you only get 2 of them. I'd recommend picking up some additional track and one or two more cars from Hornby to extend the train to 3 or 4 coaches over all.Do be aware, this is size OO scale, so a little bit larger than US scale HO. It fits the HO track, and will link up with HO train, but the actual cars are just a little larger than their US counterparts.

Look amazing but the only complaint I have on mine is the wires wasn't connected to the motor and I had to fix it and the face plate on the front had to be glued back on

I bought the Hornby train set after researching it and others online. I'm a total train novice. The track was fairly easy to put together. More detailed instructions would have been appreciated. The train itself is beautifully detailed. The engine and passenger cars are red-brown, which seems to be the case with many other Hogwarts trains made by other companies. I'm personally not bothered by the color, but be advised that the set is not fire engine red. Works great! A really fine train, very pleased!

My wife set it up and it keeps coming off the tracks

I set this train up and the power stopped working mid way through the train going around the track. I plugged it into a different power outlet and the train will start to go and the device loses power. Hoping to get another power device soon.

Really nice set. Train and Coaches have great detail. Ordered a DCC encoder and works really good on my DCC Christmas layout.
