Don't pass this one by!
An awesome kids' book for kids and for young at heart. It's touching, it's funny and it's tells what it's like moving to another culture for a young girl - the wonders, the friendships and the difficulties. One of the best!

Love this book!
Love this book because I'm a Chinese-American, and reading this book made me empathize with Shirley Temple Wong. It's a children's book, but I'm reading it with my ten year old daughter, and it's the first time I'm reading it. You can definitely finish the book in about an hour if you're a fast reader. It's a thin children's chapter book, and there are illustrations, which makes the book even shorter. It's a great cultural book, even if it is outdated with some of its euphemisms... but I also love it because she's from China and moved to NYC, and I'm from NYC too, so I like being able to personally relate to the character.Essentially what the book is about is an immigrant Chinese girl who moves to the US and lives in Brooklyn, NYC and is trying to assimilate with her new culture.

Adorable children's book!!
This is an incredible children's book!!! I cannot stress enough how much I loved it. I ordered this for my mom because she is an elementary English teacher. She bought this as one of the books to read with her class and is so glad she did. She has just adored this book! It is so cute and very accurate. She has been able to plan lots of fun activities with her students including a rewards system with candy and baseball cards, just like from the story. She also was able to bring fortune cookies to class and the kids enjoyed that, too. She has had so much fun with this book and it has been really cool for her to see the students enjoy the book and have some fun reading and learning about a girl their age from a different culture and time. She also got to talk with the students about the Chinese zodiac and explain to them what that is and what it means. She has had a blast with the book and so have the kids!If you're considering getting this for your child or someone you know, I highly recommend it!! It is so cute and this book is great. Very well written and very appropriate for elementary school kids!Give it a shot! You won't regret it :)

I thought this book was pretty cute! I had always wanted to read this ...
I thought this book was pretty cute! I had always wanted to read this when I was a kid. I remember a girl reading it in third grade (back in 1992). I don't know why I hadn't read it back then, but either way, I read it!In homeschooling my two sons, we are doing a study on China. Although this is not heavily based in China, and is mainly set in Brooklyn, NY, USA, It shows a bit of what family life in China during that time in the late 1940s might have been like and what some of her upbringing could be like as an immigrant.Bandit, as she is known as in China, chooses an American name when she hears that she is going to be living in the US, where her father was looking for work. She had not seen him in so long and was excited, but sad that she would have to leave her family. This story shows some of the hardships she might face while going to school and while not even knowing the language at first. I don't know if a kid would learn English as quickly as she does, but it was still pretty interesting and a cute story. In the process of the year of the Boar (1947, the year my dad was born), there is a rookie for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson. A bit of the story revolves around him and the sport of Baseball. My sons really had enjoyed this story too. I think the only unsettling part of it is that there is some name calling (though I think it was necessary) as well as two girls looking at an anatomy book (but saying they are naked people). That whole scene is just odd. It leads to interesting discussion, for certain.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!
This book was amazing. It talked about a Chinese girl who went to America and had to adapt with all the changes. It funny no she coped with them. I did questions on the book for school. She even got to meet her role model. She was not he fifth grade, I'm in 6th. Anyway, I recommend this book to anyone who reads it because it's funny, lovable, and family-friendly.

Must read!!!
A very on-point view of immigration from a child’s view. Though set many decades ago, this story of young Shirley Temple Wong, is very similar to the story of many young immigrant children today.I read this story as a child, then bought for my 10 year old. She read it in one sitting, because it is very engaging.

A childhood favorite
Being myself a non english speaking child to move to the States at a tender age, I guess intuitively I just loved the book as a child. Over 30 years on I got a new copy and enjoyed it so much, written so well, realistic and full of character. Perfect for kids to enjoy and with a nice little message on tolerance, social diversity and the magic of being different and unique.
