great sound, high quality video, worth every penney
Bought most of ABBA's albums\tapes in the 70's. Just started to collect their dvds and this is the first one I bought. FWIW since buying Essential I have also purchased ABBA Deluxe, ABBA In Concert 1979, and have ABBA in Japan on order. Having these videos and the old TV performances is great as they were very hard to see here in the US in the 70's.Others have detailed what is included on the dvd so I won't be doing that. I did give 5 stars because the sound is very good, most of the videos themselves are of high quality, and unlike others posting reviews all of the content is new to me. The only disappointing video is "I do, I do, I do, I do, I do" sounds great, like the rest of the music but picture quality is poor(blurry) on my hd tv and is the only video I tend to never watch. Most of the rest come across as vibrant and colorful approaching hd. Then there are a couple that while not hd quality are certainly more than acceptable.I figured I'd never watch the Spanish language bonus tracks but I was wrong. I love "Conociéndome, Conociéndote (Knowing Me, Knowing You)" and really enjoy the other four Spanish tracks(Estoy Sonando (I Have A Dream), Gracias Por La Música (Thank You For The Music), Felicidad (Happy New Year), No Hay A Quien Culpar (When All Is Said And Done) ) and watch them often. As a fan from the 70's I was always amazed at how they sang in English and, if you hadn't been told, you had no clue they were from Sweden. Hearing them in Spanish just as impressive. It shows just how professional they were and their attention to detail. If, like me, you are just starting to collect the ABBA dvds this is a good place to start. I chose Essential over Definitive, though they are very close to the same, due to price (Essential though newer was about half the price of Definitive when I bought it), reviews I read here and online stating the sound of this dvd was top notch, and the general perceptions I got from other reviews was the video overall was better in Essential.I do highly recommend ABBA the Essential Collection.

ABBA was the 1974 Eurovision winner singing one of their #1 hits "Waterloo"
ABBA was formed in 1972 in Sweden. The hilarious movie "Eurovision" shows them on TV in the background as they sing "Waterloo" (the first track on this Essential Collection DVD) when they won the Eurovision music contest in 1974 with this wonderful hit.So, for those who might be unfamiliar with ABBA, who were they?ABBA thrived for a decade, from 1972 to 1982. Their songs, comprised of 19 international #1 hits (ABBA DVD Number Ones) were, and still are, spectacular, upbeat disco tunes, the likes of which cause nightmares for their competitors. Each of their songs tells a unique story, some of which are based on trials and tribulations of their personal lives. Yet fans are still enthralled and keep buying anything with ABBA's name on it.Is ABBA's music any good?ABBA performed what may be their best song "Dancing Queen", dressed in royal outfits, for the Queen of England (not shown on this DVD unfortunately). Recently, based on sales of their music products, ABBA has eclipsed The Beatles, propelling them to the all time #2 spot in Pop music, second only to the group Queen. This should tell you that not only is ABBA's music good, but also that it's great!By the way, ABBA made their own music videos before MTV came into being, using their format in order to advertise themselves to the world stage. They toured all over Europe and Japan, making only a single tour here in the U.S. Can you imagine what could have happened had they claimed stakes on American billboards based on stateside concerts rather than on accolades from fans around the world?! ABBA might be #1! Well, they are to their loyal fans. What's all the fuss about concerning ABBA?Now that you know, it's time to add ABBA The Essential Collection to your own ABBA collection. You'll be glad you did. This DVD is terrific!
