Ireland: A Terrible Beauty

Great companion coffee table book for readers of Trinity!
The photos by Jill Uris are stunning. Leon spent roughly a year in Ireland researching for his book Trinity, he traveled all over the Island and the history part of the book is the product of that research.I read Trinity when i was about 20 in the late 70's. I recently reread the book on my kindle, it was at that time i started looking for Ireland: A terrible Beauty, It was out of print and all i could get was a used copy, the one i got from a Amazon seller did not have a dust cover ( they tend to get in the way, but the binding and quality of the book itself was well worth it. As the Grandson of Irish emigrants, it has a place in my heart!

St Patrick's Day
Book received well wrapped and packaged. Condition better than anticipated. Very pleased since this book was a St Patrick's Day gift for my Irish wife to accompany Trinity, the Leon Uris novel.

This is a GEM of a book. Beautifully written and photographed.
This book is gorgeous and is quite literally about the 12th copy I’ve purchased over the years. When this book first came out in the 70’s I must have bought 2 or 3 copies a year. I’m of Irish heritage (2nd gen) and I gave this book as a gift to various relatives and friends. The hardback copy. Then, a lovely softcover version was published so I gave those copies as gifts and for a while it became VERY difficult to find the hardback books without spending a small fortune. I had given my personal copy of the hard cover version to a dear friend and when he passed, his brother told me it had been one of my friends favorite books. So the brother and his family have it now which is exactly where it should be.I was going through my book collection not long ago and although I have the soft cover I thought I’d see if there were copies of this version for sale. I was so delighted to see that Amazon had it and the price was easily affordable at this point. So...here we are.Leon Uris and his wife had travelled through Ireland in the 70’s and he wrote the text, she took the photos. During those travels he conceived the idea for his wonderful books, “Trinity” and it’s sequel, “Redemption” which I also recommend.Honestly, this is just a beautiful book and one I think you’d be happy to have in your own library.

Book Review
This purchase was to replace a book that I had bought many years ago. I was looking for it recently as I wanted to show it to someone. Since I could not find it I assumed that it had been misplaced, or otherwise lost during one of my many moves around the world, so I bought another copy. This book has given me great joy over the years as I look at it and re-read it. I spent three years in the British Isles in my youth, and still remember the great times I had there and the wonderful people I met there. I still have friends there and this book helps me relive that great experience from long ago.

Condition better than described!
The hard cover book arrived in great condition...better than I anticipated. The book jacket shows minor signs of age but, hey, it is dated 1947. It shows less aging than do I! Pages are clean, not torn, and unmarked. The authors signatures are a real bonus!

revisionist history? a terrible beauty
I lost my copy of this book about a year ago , So I ordered a new one . This is a great book to Log revisionist History from . Some things I read now and compare them to what the book says is just unreal . The English being the best at revising History in a different Light . All in all still a five star Book in my opinion .Trinity being on my list of books to reorder. From the same author.

- at that point in time are excellent. Loved "Trinity" and this book really complements it
Really interesting book. Photos and description of Ireland - religion, culture, etc. - at that point in time are excellent. Loved "Trinity" and this book really complements it. I always recommend "Trinity" to people who ask about the history of Ireland. It covers the entire 900 years of British rule and it's aftermath extremely well.

Very Poor Condition
This book was advertised on the amazon.com website as being in brand new condition. It hasseverely yellowed pages, broken spine with a piece torn off, and creased and bent covers. All this detracted enormously from the content of the book, which is good.

Insultingly pretentious
A great start in poetic imagery and history. But only a few pages in the hatespeech against the Church gets underway. Even if the authors have a personal dispute with the Catholic Church, how can they -ever- profess to understand and give insight into a people that have, in their own words, always been so devoutedly Catholic if they have less than a toddlers understanding of the religion itself? It like trying to write a book on the Sovjet Union while thinking Lenin was a cereal brand.Possibly a lot of good stuff here but utterly unreliable, disrespectful and because of all this insultingly pretentious. Leave telling the story of Ireland to the Irish. (my version went into the bin, still two stars for some of the photographs).

lange gesucht
