Works fine
Worked well after sharpening with my angle grinder.I found I had Live oak roots in some areas from a tree 25 ft away, then would need a machine.

Tips on Use
Like any tool, learning to use it takes a while. Here is what worked best for me. Clear a rectangle in the area you want removed. Momentum is key, so space is needed. Slide tool quickly under the sod. At some point, step around, turn the tool on its side, roll the undercut sod onto the remaining sod. Repeat. It will break into large chunks at some point. Try to avoid tearing little strips. Takes practice.

Works very well
Works perfectly to cut under sod and areas of thick clay. For those that don't think it's shape enough, it is, sharpen it with a file or grinder. Will make pushing easier.

Wish the manufacturer had considered that a sod cutter, needs a sharp cutting edge.
Tool is well built. But, the blade edge has not been sharpened. Useless for cutting sod as shipped. Took it in when I had my mower blades sharpened. Works great now.

Has no edge; useless
Do not buy this horrible tool. Save your money and buy the $70 Sod Lifter from Lee Valley.I bought this horrid tool under duress because I had a big garden project at my mother's house and didn't have access to my tools (about 1,300 miles away.)The edge is blunt--it's actually rounded. I can't fathom why it's designed this way. I ended up returning this useless tool and used a shovel. The Lee Valley Sod Lifter, by comparison, is a joy to use and worth the $70.

If you never used one, you have got to try it!
Not many people know about this tool. Sod lifters have been around for over a hundred years and are handier than spades. I used these when I was a teenager working for a landscape company. We occasionally used it for sod lifting, but we mostly used them to edge flower beds. The leverage from these is far superior over using spades. Not many landscape companies of today landscape in the traditional way like I was raised with (they don't want to put the effort into it anymore), but a friend of mine just bought a place that is. I bought this sod lifter for him so he can maintain his property as nice as it looked when his cabins were featured in Home and Garden magazine.Using a sod lifter takes a little getting used to and developing a skill for it; but once you get the hang of it, you will love it.The only negative thing about this particular sod lifter is that the top handle is not attached very well. There is only one small pin that holds the top handle to the wooden shaft. This causes the handle to move around slightly which will eventually lead to the handle becoming very lose or even breaking off.
